Assignments over a year long
 

I got the following message:

[B]WARNING: Estimated completion date is more than one year away. The assignment may be reassigned to another user after one year.[/B]

Should I release the assignment and get something else? I do not mind long assignments, but I do not want to do a whole year worth of crunching just to throw it away (it is an LL assignment, so if I understand the algorithm correctly the new user who may get my assignment will not be able to use my intermediate results and will have to start from the beginning).

As long as the computer sends periodic updates to the server, what is the point of taking the assignment away and giving it to somebody else?

That's the LL-100M-digits worktype we told you about in the other thread. At this point, the LL wavefront is around 58M -- the first expo with 100 million digits is in the 332M range. If it gets unassigned (big if, there's no reason to unassign it) it will not be assigned again, mostly because very few people do that worktype, and even less ever actually finish the assignment. When's the completion date -- 2013, or past 2015? If it's the latter, you should switch worktypes to something less ridiculous. (Consider this: only 1 LL test has ever been completed in that range, ever.)

This must be quite a large exponent.

The completion is in 2016. It is not unreasonable. The server is new, and the server it replaced worked for nine years.

All the PrimeNet pages are listed on the left side. If you click on the plus next to "Manual Testing" you will find the same link. (Keep in mind that in 2016 we will probably have hardware that can do the same assignment in a few months -- much the same way as 4 years ago our hardware was again significantly worse.)

"View Assignments" is under "My Account" in GPU to 72. This is where you can extend GPU272 assignments, though for LL primality tests I don't think it matters where you do it there or in PrimeNet.

Isn't the manual extension only necessary for offline assignments? If P95 is talking to the server daily/weekly, wouldn't it keep the assignment active, knowing it's in progress?

I'm pretty sure he has no idea what GPU272 is. This is a hundred million digit assignment he's talking about.

@bcp19: P95 will unreserve assignments if PrimeNet thinks it's taking too long. OTOH, since it is a 100M assignment, I don't think he needs to worry about it.

Tiny distorted pictures, tiny distorted font and requiring JS to function ... but I guess the maintainers like it that way so we just have to live with it.

Indeed, I may have confused TObject with another user who was talking (in the GPU to 72 forum I think) about 100M exponents.

I was only ROFL and stuff because the 2001 quotation really did amuse me in the context. There are times I wish animated smileys could have a freeze timer, though: do their things for a bit, and quit.

I'm not sure now, but that may have been the book. The movie depended a lot more on visuals than words.

I really hope you use [URL="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ECC_memory"]ECC memory[/URL]. Others here on the forum tried those 1+ year assignments without ECC and got error codes.

Makes you wonder what is considered too long, seeing there are some DC's over 2 years old still in the system.

For those who don't know, 2010 was NOT the year that movie was made. I don't know the year, but the second movie was made long before 2010 actually came along. Same thing with 2001 movie, which I believe came out in the 70s.

Or maybe I'm thinking of Deathrace 2000. Totally different type of movie, except for putting a year far in the future in the title.
