What does "Self-Test" mean?

I just signed up and it says it's doing some test to make sure that the Lucas-Lehmer test is working OK, what does this mean, and afer it's done then what do I do?

Prime Monster 2003-12-11 22:24

The client just tests your machine to verify that it works OK. It should already have downloaded the first test. You can check this by looking in the worktodo.ini file which you will find in the same directory as the executable.

The test will take approximately 1 hour.

So where do you say is the worktodo.ini file again?

Prime Monster 2003-12-11 22:27

If you installed this under the Windows operating system, then most likely it will be in \program files\prime95

How many total tests are there, because it's on test three now, still testing the Lucas-Lehmer on my machine...

nfortino 2003-12-11 22:37

Depends on your processor speed. It picks the number of tests such that it will take about an hour.

Complex33 2003-12-11 22:38

The number of preliminary tests is dependent on the speed of your computer and the size of the exponent you are going to test. It will run for roughly an hour. Welcome aboard!

Ummm..I know this must sound sorta dumb but my computer's fan is blowing pretty hard now that Prime95 is running, is there any chance that it could cause any damage to my computer??

You now have to wait for about an hour. If no errors are reported, your machine has endured one of the most demanding CPU-tests available with success :)

After that hour of tests your machine will likely start a LL-test in earnest. Then you will have to wait some weeks or months until the test is finished. If your machine reports a prime then, you are famous. If not, you will gain ranks in the stats.

Does anyone know if Prime95 could overwork my computer?

Prime Monster 2003-12-11 22:55

The answer is no. Well, if your computer is badly cooled, then it could get too hot, but any normal computer should handle the load perfectly.

I have 36 computers running various versions of the client, and have had no problems with it so far.
