I can't even find all types of parts listed on a site, best buy's list doesn't include a hard drive list to match the drives as well. also some of the preview pictures look like you either buy the tower or monitor separate making them more money they don't deserve.
SM88, you need to look at www.newegg.com. They will have everything you need. As I said, the $250 is an estimate of what you pay to have someone else (such as best buy, staples, newegg, Radio Shack, Gateway, Dell, HP, etc ) put the computer together instead of you buying the parts yourself. |

why ? I never said anything about building one myself or that may be state that other than word upgrading in the title , in fact I've said multiple times in response that I almost undoubtedly buying a new one ( if anything), I just know you guys know at least as much ( and much more most times) than I do, so I thought I'd get your opinion, the only thing I've seen in favor of building my own is customization ability the con, extra cost. |
Wait Newegg will assemble comps for you?
|
dunno if newegg will assemble systems, but they will certainly sell you new systems whole!!!!
SM88, the advantage of building your own is that it SAVES $$....at the expense of your time and expertise. I brought up newegg after you complained about Best Buy's site being not having stuff you needed... Also monitors are separate just about everywhere.
No question, but really anything would be better than Windows 7 on a 5+ year old PC.
Oh, I see what you had been saying: that WinXP would be better on the old machine than Win7, not that it would be better than Xubuntu. Sorry, I misread your statement. Disclaimer: I didn't care for Xubuntu when I installed it to try it out some years ago. |

IMX there's no money savings (and negative savings after time + effort are factored in) unless you have existing components to use. When I assembled my last computer it was about $50 less than a comparable machine I could have purchased ready-to-use, except that I didn't buy an OS. Had I bought a copy of Windows it would have cost me more than a prebuilt machine. On the other hand you get to customize the machine to your exact needs/preferences and there's something to be said for that. |

The reason is that I carefully choose exactly what I need for number crunching, and most prebuilt hardware fails my initial check. Luigi |
We have a legit copy of XP Pro. It is the full version and not the upgrade. We have the code from the box cut out and the receipt. It has been installed before so you will have to call Microsoft to activate it.
Just send us a PM and we'll arrange shipping it to you. Be aware that XP no longer has security updates. |
it's come to my attention that asking this question in the hardware forum was just asking for trouble.
|
Quick! Get out the daggers! This is trouble????:max::razz::loco:
