Linux slower then Windows ( both 64 bit)
 

I ask on many forums, get some or no answers, so I find this forums, so lets try.
I am on PRPNet now.
I try nearly all Linux distros, make custom rom, make smaller rom, use all kernel optimization I can get but always windows version of program is faster then same Linux version. Since I try on same computer ( two different hard discs) hardware is not issue. Also I have no GUI on Linux, to be less memory hungry, but still is slower.
For example:
windows
ppsLow server WU is finished from 79-80 second less then 1 sec
linux - same WU 79-90 second.
Since you are guys that write this software are here, I ask you, what is reason?
Second I noticed that on PPSLow there is no difference in time per WU, but in SGS there is big difference if I run one or four clinets ( since I have quad core)
Difference is on processor that have [B]no L3 cache[/B]. On processor that have L3 cache there is no difference ( one or all cores).

There's just a few users on the forum who don't subscribe to the conventional social contract ("if you can't say something nice don't say anything at all"). So, yeah, 100+ viewers apparently were interested by the intriguing title (Hey, "Linux is slower th[B]a[/B]n Windows"? let's see...), came, found the problem poorly stated and couldn't be bother enough to try to understand what you were trying to say.

You can start helping people help you by explaining what CPUs were you talking about (you refer to those that have and those that don't have L3 cache). What distros were you referring to (different distros pack different libs and the root of you problem may be in them), etc etc.

Plus, you haven't picked the most lively subforum. Things can flow slow in "Extra Stuff" (unless of course they are about women, GW, economy or hoaxes).

if it involves reading from hard drives it could be the difference between the hard drives I would think ( I'm not a good person around these things though, so I'm not 100%) , if there's a difference between the kernels could that not lead to a difference in time, also the different OSes may need different coding and some may take longer.

doesn't make sense to me 79-80 second less then 1 sec. so negative 79 to negative 78 seconds ?

So that is general Linux problem...
My CPU is also irrelevant since I use same comp for Linux and Windows, two different hard disc.
Linux applications wont be slower because slower hard disc, since amount of data is really small, maybe 10 kb. Problem is always not well optimized application for Linux, and very well optimized app for Windows.

To explain: on windows there is range: some WU are done in 79, some in 80 second, so there is only 1 second difference.

On the other hand: time per WU for Linux are in range of 79-90 seconds, so that is considerably slower then Windows. (most times are 86 seconds)

Could it be that Linux is using more power and consequently is heating up your processor?

Maybe you should clean out the dust from your processor's heat sink and fan.

(I presume everything is 64 bits -- the OS and Prime95.exe/mprime applications)

No, dust and heat are not problems..
And again: not are applications are 64 bits.
I find that in Windows 64 bit OS faster applications are 32 bit, but in Linux that is not case. In Linux all must be 64 bit to get fastest time.
And since some applications are not written in 64 bit, I must use what I have :)

Open a terminal and run "top" to see what processes are using when you are getting the variable times. To quit top press "q". :smile:

Since I have quad, it shows 4 same named processes, with cpu from 99-100 %
