On the contrary, obnoxiousness is pretty much the only valid reason for banning.
I vehemently disagree. If it were a valid reason, we might have seen at least a third of the posters here banned at one point or another. Banning for obnoxiousness is, in my opinion, a misuse of moderator power.

I was banned for a week for pottymouthing after being
egged on by the notorious HRB. (Our PMs were distinctly "adult only"
and wickedly funny). I regarded my week's banishment as justified and
a welcome relief/shot over the bow. I couldn't understand why HRB
persistently berated the mods here. Nor can I understand how Bob
could fail to suss that the mods were being as diplomatic as possible.

At least Bob's ban has given me the chance to regain my rightful 5th
place in the Mally table:coffee:

PS I thought the "coffee" smily would be
appropriate here, but for reasons known
only to the Almighty I can't seem to "go advanced" ATM

Failure to listen helps, too, as does a total failure of the humor detection/generation circuits!!!

P.S. Advanced smiley generator seems broken....

Within 10 minutes of meeting William last year,
we were strolling across Hampstead heath and
gossiping about fellow forum members.

Me: "I was about to say that Bob had no
sense of humour, but that's not true"

William: "I agree."

Me: "In response to a long post from Ernst
about pollution he posted:
"Where is Tom Lehrer when you need him?".
Paul came straight back with..."

William: "Drinking the water and breathing the air".
