I got a grade A for my English O-level. Numerical grades were at that time awarded for the CSE, a lower level exam. A grade 1 CSE was said to be equivalent to a grade C O-level.

This was over thirty years ago, what the exams are like now, I do not know.

A levels were graded with letters, and O levels with numbers.
Not sure CSE was invented then.
