GIMPS Milestones
There are these nearest milestones as of October 24, 2011:
All exponents below 22,545,883 have been tested and double-checked. All exponents below 38,103,407 have been tested at least once. Countdown to testing all exponents below M(42643801) once: 166 Countdown to testing all exponents below M(43112609) once: 227 Countdown to proving M(24036583) is the 41st Mersenne Prime: 2 Countdown to proving M(25964951) is the 42nd Mersenne Prime: 3,951
I guess something great will happen soon - proving M(24036583) is the 41st Mersenne Prime: 2. But what does "2" mean? Days or what? Is it tightly related to the 1st milestone - double-checking all exponents below 24,036,583 should be completed first? Would you be so kind to describe these milestones a little bit? Thank you! |
But what does "2" mean? Days or what?
2 exponents left to check.
Is it tightly related to the 1st milestone - double-checking all exponents below 24,036,583 should be completed first?
Yes, intimately related. You can't have one without the other.

Yes, intimately related. You can't have one without the other.
More specifically, here's a list of all unverified LL tests between 1 and 24036583. You can see that the smallest unverified residue is 22,545,883, as well as 23,480,917 at second smallest. Based on other information I'd estimate mid-November before these are complete. |

I should have thought of exponents not days when after two days I saw that counter have't changed :) It's interesting how long it takes double-checking of the next exponent
Countdown to proving M(25964951) is the 42nd Mersenne Prime: 3,948
|
I've been keeping a record since 4100 or so, and the current linear regression pegs completion around the end of May (03/26/2012 20:10:58 to be exact). Of course right near the end, the rate will slow down a bit, so I imagine sometime over the summer.
end of May (03/26/2012 20:10:58 to be exact)
Is it March, or is it 05.26? I did not get it... |
In other news today, Dubslow discovered he does not know the names of the months.
Edit: Or he can't tell the M's apart. One or the other. Yes, I meant March, though I still stand by the summer prediction. |
