I have fond memories of buying and reading MAD Magazine circa 1970. In more recent times, I bought an issue just to see what it was like, and IMO it was but a shadow of its former self.

I am brought to mind of a story I heard many years ago about one of the principals behind MAD. I seem to recall it having been William Gaines, who died "in his sleep" in 1992, but I am not sure. So far my efforts to find anything about the story on line have been unsuccessful.

What I heard was a radio interview with a former Phone Phreak. He said in the interview that they had victimized this guy from MAD magazine -- making weird calls to him. He would complain to the phone company. They would investigate, but there would be no record of incoming calls at the times he reported to them. He thought he was going crazy, and committed suicide.

Lots not to like about the man, but he had the labor and environmental-arbitrage aspects of globalization right, here w.r.to the Clinton-era NAFTA trade deal:

"It’s pretty simple: If you’re paying $12, $13, $14 an hour for factory workers and you can move your factory South of the border, pay a dollar an hour for labor,…have no health care—that’s the most expensive single element in making a car— have no environmental controls, no pollution controls and no retirement, and you don’t care about anything but making money, there will be a giant sucking sound going south."

Lots not to like about the man, but
In my book, clear thinking and clear speaking and perceptiveness and lack of deception (self or others) count for a lot. Some seem to regard such elements of intelligence and integrity as bad manners or immorality.

Couple more followups on the legacy of the late H. Ross Perot:

o And current 3rd-party (listed as Independent in the Senate, though running for president under the Dem umbrella) candidate Bernie Sanders weighs in:
[i]
Ross Perot was a champion for veterans' rights and ahead of his time on disastrous trade policies. During his campaign, he explained, in depth, how he would address our national problems and spurred serious discussion. Ross Perot was a one-of-a kind American. He will be missed.
