Agreed. Brilliant at ad-lib and improvisation. My friends and I were looking for a late night meal in Kanab, Utah once, and noticed two people sitting in the patio of the motel's restaurant. Went over to see if it was still open, and realized it was Don Knots and Tim Conway; they were staying there while filming one of the Apple Dumpling Gang movies. We fought the urge to go over and gush about how great they were; decided to let them enjoy their beers and relax. Norm |
He was still doing promos for Carol Burnett and Friends on MeTV a few years ago ... he and Harvey Korman were so great together on that show. Tim considered it his job to crack Harvey up mid-sketch via some outrageous unrehearsed bit of hilarity, and Harvey rarely failed to oblige. Anyone who wants to see them at their best, check out their classic The dentist sketch on uTube.
They showed that sketch on the 50[sup]th[/sup] anniversary special. Also some sketches where they were just barely not cracking up, and some where they just lost it...

I think I have my parents' hardback copy of The Caine Mutiny. I have no idea how many times I read it in my youth. |

I also liked him, and never knew he was half Romanian (his mother maiden name in the linked article sounded very Romanian and made me look for it). Rest in peace! |

Norm
Dude, you should have just joined them and sat watching, just like they were on tv. A coworker of mine knew Steve Martin was going to be at a local hotel, so he went prepared, with a newspaper, and sat in the hotel lobby reading it, casually looked over and said Hi, Steve as he went by and went back to reading his paper. Got the full voice and mannerisms, "You are a wild and crraaazzy guy!" in return. |
