Thank you. I suppose that vanity about my ignorance of popular culture is one of my many failings. But honestly, "I don't give a durn." (...not even worth a "damn.")
Thank you. I suppose that vanity about my ignorance of popular culture is one of my many failings. But honestly, "I don't give a durn." (...not even worth a "damn.")
There is a lot of popular culture worthy of the phrase, "Ignorant and proud of it."

It's kind of sad that Jeopardy contestants have to answer factual questions that are often reasonably substantive, and the potential rewards are much less than those in other, much sillier programs which are also much more popular.

Still, when I think of Jeopardy contestants, I think of "Mr. Memory" in the Hitchcock classic The 39 Steps, who is introduced by an emcee as follows:
I have the honor of presenting to you...
one of the most remarkable men in the world.

Every day he commits to memory new facts... and remembers every one of them.
Facts from history, from geography, from newspapers... from scientific books, millions and millions of them.
That guy would probably win enough on Jeopardy to bankrupt NBC and all the sponsors.

There was a (IMO) pretty funny movie based on the "quiz show contestant is winning too much" idea, Champagne for Caesar.

Friends describe Mr. M as "very banal-retentive".

PC survival rates have changed little since 1970, unlike most other cancers.
It's probably some combination of a hard problem and not high enough on the top N causes of death list yet. It may be moving up as progress is made on others.

Sorry for your losses to it. It claimed an aunt of mine too in her 70s. Someone who lived at the same apartment complex I used to, mentioned her late husband quit eating steak because he didn't enjoy it any more, shortly before he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. It's pretty deadly, with poor 5-year survival, like glioblastoma.

He had a slot this week on the Radio 4 programme, "last Word"

Rather belated, this one. Story dated March 31, 2019... James McCord

And I thought it strange that, when Sam Ervin died in 1985, while it was reported in the media, there was dead silence from the White House. Of course, Ervin had been sounding the alarm about what the Admin was doing to habeas corpus...
