Not an entry in the RIP thread, rather a plea to not appear in it for a while yet - read yesterday that longtime ‘Jeopardy!’ host Alex Trebek has been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
Just got done watching the first Team Tournament of Champions last Tuesday night, that ToC was a weeklong affair, and he seemed perfectly fine, for whatever that's worth in the context of "the magic of television". |
Just got done watching the first Team Tournament of Champions last Tuesday night, that ToC was a weeklong affair, and he seemed perfectly fine, for whatever that's worth in the context of "the magic of television".
The All Star games were taped a while back. Jeopardy appears to air at least 1 to 3 months behind the taping. Pancreatic cancer tends to get misdiagnosed early on or there are few symptoms at first.
I lost a dear friend to PC in 2002. From confirmed diagnosis to death was less than 2 months. Prior to the right diagnosis there was a diabetes misdiagnosis, etc. Had a coworker diagnosed with it later in the 2000's. He received Gemzar which gave him at least a year and a half more life. He stayed working during chemo (on a 4/10 shift, he was no good for Saturday and Sunday after his Friday afternoon chemo, Monday he was barely ok.) The sister of a former neighbor was in on the trials of Gemzar before approval. She had a complete remission. PC survival rates have changed little since 1970, unlike most other cancers. |
I think that he would say "I'm not dead yet".
I posted the item over yonder in the "Unhappy me" thread, including a quote of what he actually did say.
In my book, Alex Trebek is among the bravest of the brave. |
In my book, Alex Trebek is among the bravest of the brave.
Don't think too highly of him. He can be a tool on the ice. I have talked to a former pro ref that officiated a celeb pro-am charity game that he was in. He was more of a pain than anyone else there. More than even most pro players that my "friend" has dealt with.

Please forgive my daytime TV and celebrity ignorance. What does "He can be a tool on the ice" mean? Also, my first response to ewmayer's post would have been "who?", had he not prefaced it with "longtime ‘Jeopardy!’ host..." EDIT: This is a major source of Jeopardy!, knowledge, for me: I love the cameo of the original song's author at the end. |
Please forgive my daytime TV and celebrity ignorance. What does "He can be a tool on the ice" mean?
Hockey. He was playing in a pro-am celeb Hockey game. He argued to much with the ref was not acting the way someone should in one of these games. I don't recall all of the details.
Alex Trebek also has been the host on a number of other game shows (both in Canada and the US of A) and been a spokesman for Colonial Penn life insurance and other things. |
