An inspiring life and personality. A man that accomplished his mission to the very end.
For me, the most striking example of the triumph of mind over body. He will (already is) be missed.... Speaking of coincidences, Stephen was born on the 8th of January 1942, the 300th anniversary of Galileo´s dead, and died on 14 of March, Einstein´s birth day. Very appropriate. |

Many thanks for calling attention to the Mendez case. It was, at least, a beginning.
Roger Penrose has written a good obituary for Stephen Hawking:
https://www.theguardian.com/science/2018/mar/14/stephen-hawking-obituary
A very informative article- thanks for posting that link. That provides much more background about his work than others I've seen over the years; I've got even more respect for him now than before. Norm |
I just posted a link to a Naked Capitalism article re. Hawking on modern economics over in the Soap Box MET2018 thread.
Ermey was originally meant to function only as a technical adviser to Kubrick [in the filming of 1987's Full metal Jacket], but when Kubrick was impressed by an instructional tape Ermey put together in which he went on long rants at extras, he instead cast him in the role of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman. Kubrick allowed Ermey to improvise and write or edit his dialogue, and he said Ermey often only needed two or three takes to finish a scene — both unusual for Kubrick films.
Any bets on whether gunnery Sgt. Hartman is now eternally whipping the maggots into shape in heaven or in hell? |
