She was one of my most respected authors. |

“A child free from the guilt of ownership and the burden of economic competition will grow up with the will to do what needs doing and the capacity for joy in doing it. It is useless work that darkens the heart. The delight of the nursing mother, of the scholar, of the successful hunter, of the good cook, of the skillful maker, of anyone doing needed work and doing it well – this durable joy is perhaps the deepest source of human affection and of sociability as a whole.” -Ursula K. LeGuin, The Dispossessed (1974) |
:goodposting: That is one of her less known works, in my experience. As in many of her other novels, she takes on complex human issues.
For me, one of her best is "The Left Hand of Darkness." The concept of a human sub-species which is estrous-driven, and sequentially hermaphroditic gives rise to very many marvels. A mono-gendered human is a "pervert" in these peoples' eyes. This is an incredible frame for the whole discussion of gender. |
