Wow! You really seem to be feeling the weight of the world just now. I hope it lightens up a bit for you.
Condolences on your losses, Ross - mothers should never outlive their children, whether they be human or not. I expect human mothers suffer more keenly in such circumstances, though. The downside of having a large, imagination-oriented higher brain.
Thanks guys. I am a bit of a blue-haired cat lady. Very kind thoughts from both of you.

WHY did you mother die when she was so relatively YOUNG?

@Only Human: I feel sorry for you. Can you tell me the cause of Linda's death? She should have lived to almost TWICE that age!

Also, I had 2 cats die in the past year. One of them died on Dec 1st, the other on the night before Easter, which makes both dates easy to remember. In fact, most of my long gone pets have died on or within 1 week of a holiday/important day. It's likely a coincidence, but it's a very weird one:

I lost one on Saint Patrick's Day, 2008, then November 3rd, 2011 (Panama's Independence Day), then December 1st, 2012 (One of the 2 dates for Rosa Parks Day), then March 30th (1 day before Easter)

She had health issues related to lifelong type I diabetes and had had at least two previous heart attacks.

A better example would be Carthage.
Not only a great writer but a great wit - as a couple of passages from the obit illustrate perfectly:

A friend passed along the following:

NPR correspondent and former All Things Considered co-host Noah Adams recalls a day he spent with the crime writer in his hometown.

The bit about "where Tiger stadium had been" is a suitable metaphor for Detroit's current straits.
Thanks for that--it's strangely comforting.
