All of a sudden, MFAKTO is throwing the following error when I try to run it on my AMD Radeon HD 7770:
Select device - Error: No platform found
ERROR: init_CL<3, 0> failed
I saw this old post by Bdot, but I'm not sure what the solution is. A few days ago (as described here) I reverted to an old GPU driver since the current one was giving problems, but MFAKTO ran fine for some days after the change, until yesterday. The only system-related thing I did with the PC last night was to reboot.

Maybe a setting needs to be changed in the .INI file? Suggestions as to how to proceed are welcome.

UPDATE: For whatever reason, it looks like the GPU cannot be found. See the attached CLinfo output.

Not sure what could be going on. Ideas?

NEXT UPDATE: I went back to the newest AMD driver (the one I had uninstalled because it created visual lag and choppiness when moving the mouse, typing, or opening programs). This one is working, so at least we are back in TF business.

No drag evident yet (it's only been a few minutes), although throughput is at ~129-130 GHz-days/day instead of the 134-135 I'd been getting up until recently. Still, 129 > 0 so I won't complain.

This card's been running virtually nonstop for six years. Wonder how much longer it can work for before needing to be replaced.

I've seen drops in throughput in gpuowl with AMD driver updates, on Windows 7, of 0.5%, 0.65%, even once 5.3%, depending on driver version and gpu card. So I don't upgrade unless necessary. I don't recall ever seeing a speedup with a driver update.

Participating in GIMPS has provided a different perspective on the widespread advice to, "keep your drivers up to date!!"

Do you fill worktodo.txt with PrimeNet assignments manually?
Is there a way to automate it including results reporting?

James Heinrich 2019-01-09 21:08

I believe people like to use MISFIT for GIMPS-range TF.

Personally I do TF above 1000M and use the automated fetch-submit script provided on the TF>1000M page.

Rodrigo 2019-01-09 21:24

@clarke, I do fill my worktodo.txt manually, even though this sometimes leads to lapses in TF work getting done when a batch of exponents finishes overnight. A lot of people here use automated means of getting new work. But for me, doing it by hand keeps me involved in the project.

If you'd rather get your TF work with minimal effort, you may want to take a look at MISFIT. (Hopefully I haven't missed any others.)

EDIT: James beat me to the punch regarding MISFIT.

Something you may want to try before buying a new card ( unless you just want a new card ) is to remove the heatsink/fan, clean it and the GPU ( & memory, perhaps ), and reapply the thermal paste.

Good idea. I've never opened up a GPU, so this would be an excuse to do it and learn something.

See the attachment at post 3 of https://www.mersenneforum.org/showthread.php?t=23371 for the choices, versus application (scroll to the bottom of the attachment).
Using an automation tool makes sense when running lots of fast assignments and having a reliable Internet connection.
It's probably less useful when doing a lot of software QA and limits testing, as I do; assignments are frequently hand picked for that, and results get tabulated in spreadsheets.
