what does it take to get listed on major news agencies?
I was wondering, to get certain news listed on Yahoo! or other large news agencies, is there a special procedure, and/or does the importance of the news have to reach a certain level?
I mean, even if we appear on a small Yahoo! article, we may still gian much publicity. |

maybe you should try to get in touch with people responsable for scientific news at their news agency. announce that you might have some great news soon. once M40 has passed the verification test, you should send em a small summary of "what happened" and who to contact for further questions.
Maybe you could tell something like "If you'd print M40 using a 12pt font, you're going to need ....blabblbal" |
I believe that an official press release is written by George. My question is who this is submitted to. I can dream the discovery and the website being mentioned on my beloved Morning Editon of NPR, or the nightly news of some major network. Just imagine if this reached a few million people and just a few thousand checked us out. Major production increases. Perhaps the EFF prize should be talked up.... Any thoughts?

Get a list of the most important online agencies and send it to them. They will be interested, as it quite something. When these agencies publish it, send it to news agencies with an online presence.
GIMPS is a very well-known project and when a new Mersenne is discovered, then it is newswhorthy. Some people here must have contacts with some of the agencies. If the announcement is posted here, then these people can send it to their contacts. Spread it around  PM |
Once new Mersenne prime is verified and official press release is written by George I plan to send it to local Croatian newspapers (if it is allowed?). Maybe everyone can do the same for their local newspapers (as we are really international bunch).

And how about translations to other languages?
I volunteer to do the german translation, but would like some fellow german here to check my translation before the announcement is forwarded to news agencies. Perhaps we should open a thread with those translations (after the english press release is available), so corrections can be made and then everyone can pick the announcement in his language to forward to the agencies. Another topic: At least the mersenne.de domain is not registered. I (or someone else here) could register it and then at least forward all visitors to mersenne.org (perhaps even to the german translation linked there). Good idea? Or is it better to keep the number of domains to a minimum? Tau |

Are there any other functioning mirrors aivailable ? After M39 was found I believe there were mirrors in Polish, Danish, French, Dutch and Spanish, in addition to the ones above. PM |
Thank you PM  I volunteer to do the italian translation, and publish on the best known italian computer magazines with which I collaborate as soon as it gets ready. I must add that I wrote a couple of articles on factoring and LL-testing Mersenne numbers: those articles will show up in on November and December issues of Computer Programming. It would be great if I could add a small box on the December article adding news about the discovery... Luigi |
I volunteer to do Croatian translation.

I (or actually my wife) volunteers to do the Chinese translation of the press release and send it to news agencies in the PRC.
However, although she's a native Mandarin speaker, she is not a mathematician, so I'd appreciate it if someone Chinese with a knowlege of mathematics could proofread it for us. Also, it would be nice if anyone here in Singapore, HK, Taiwan etc could handle release to their respective news agencies. |
If we could get the AP onboard that would be very significant. They have quite a reach.
3. Where can I send a press release? Send an e-mail (no attachments) to pr@ap.org If you have a story of local significance, you should send your idea to a local AP bureau. The AP has a bureau in every state capital. If your story has national or international significance, you can mail your press release to AP's General/National Desk or International Desk at Associated Press, 50 Rockefeller Plaza, New York, N.Y. 10020.
Also I think NPR would be a good place to run with it. They often have little snippits like GIMPS: http://www.npr.org/about/pitch/ |
