Newbie needs help w/ Debian install of mprime264
Hello, I am a newbie to linux and the gimps project. I have debian squeeze x64 installed on my desktop which is running properly. I have downloaded mprime264 for linux x64. I have the folder uncompressed in my home folder. Inside the folder is the mprime executable. when i double click on it several new files appear such as PQ****.bu P2**** and a file called prime.spl. However, no dialogue box appears as indicated by the readme file or the instructions on the mersenne.org website. ugghhh it's driving me mad...i have tried for a couple days to get this to work(downloaded other versions 32x versions etc) but can't seem too make it happen. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to Linux, and to GIMPS.
mprime doesn't have a graphical interface. Open a terminal, cd to the directory and invoke the program by typing ./mprime -m |
Thank You that initiated the program. I guess were my confusion was in reading readme.txt the instructions state that you will be asked three questions and the website shows a graphical interface which my guess now must be for windows. I am assuming i can input the necessary data in the terminal then?
Thanks again "1) Download and decompress mprime.tgz. You've probably done this already since you are reading this file. 2) Connect to the Internet. Create an account at http://mersenne.org 3) Run mprime. You will be see 3 sets of questions: 3a) The first set gathers information about you. Enter your user ID and optionally and computer name. If you are using several computers, use the same user ID but a unique computer name on each machine. An easy-to-remember user ID will be helpful if you plan to visit the PrimeNet server's web page to view reports on your progress. 3b) The second set of questions gathers information about your machine. Fill in roughly how many hours a day you leave your computer running. 3c) The third set of questions gathers information about using the Primenet server. Note that mprime will never dial-up to connect to the Internet, rather it waits for a time when you are already connected to contact the server. Mprime will now contact the PrimeNet server to get some work for your computer to do. 4) If you are using a proxy server you may need to do some further configuration. See the later secion on "SETTING UP A PROXY SERVER". 5) Configure your startup scripts so that mprime runs every time you boot your computer. |

Yes. Just answer the questions as appropriate. When you're done, the client will grab some assignments from the server and begin work immediately. |
Thank You very much. It is up and running.
