Religious Intolerance
 

We are currently (and slowly) reading "The True Believer" and decided to look up some Eric Hoffer quotes. We found an interesting one:

"To know a person's religion we need not listen to his profession of faith but must find his brand of intolerance."

Thoughts?

I am intolerant to all sorts of things, but I doubt there is a religion that matches. And even if there were a religion that matches I would deny professing faith to it, I would prefer to keep my options open towards changing my intolerances if I wanted to.

Maybe, but it simply and vividly portrays an aspect of religion...
or summat... whatever that is (Paul Whitehouse)

Religious Intolerance
 

We need a common definition of the term intolerance in order
to discuss its probably worst form, religious intolerance, which
might mean either intolerance of another's religious views or
that any religious view engenders intolerance.

Based on the first amendment of the US Constitution, it's clear
the we as a people deplore restrictions on the rights of
individuals to believe whatever they choose, so long as they
don't violate others' rights.

But individuals vary in their respect for the rights of others.
What can we do to eliminate religious intolerance?

Perhaps you should express that view in the Religious Intolerance thread.

Since religion implies belief in some kind of God,

Some religions do not believe in any kind of God. Buddhism, for instance, is atheistic.

Buddhism is generally regarded as a[I] bona fide[/I] religion. Cases or various strengths could be made for scientific rationalism, communism and libertarianism being included as religious belief systems. Whether Scientology is an atheistic religion I will leave for others to consider.
