Hmmm

I had two tutors at Exeter College, Oxford.

Peter Jones could well have modelled his small talk
abilities on PAMDirac.

Hmmm was his catchphrase - more of a nasal grunt than "Hum".

Typical extract from my penultimate term:

Peter: Hmmm. (asks question)
Me: blank
Peter: Hmmm. You haven't read what I told you to last week have you?
Me: (Sheepishly) No
Peter: Hmmm. Would you like a glass of sherry?
Me: Yes. Thankyou.
(Sherry ritual relaxes us both)
Peter:Hmmm. What class of degree to you expect to get?
Me: I hope for a first.
Peter: Hmmm. Let's consider how the first class will be populated.
There are some people in this university as clever as you...
Me: And some of them will have been doing some work.

If you ever finally read it, you must have become
a better student.

I've always been picked on for being a smartass.
Accordingly, I have spent much of my life dumbing down, occasional
examples of which may be found on this forum.

I'm sure I'm supposed to recognize/respond to this somehow.

Currently blank, but it sounds vaguely amusing.
