Intel Celeron 700 MHz?
 

I just borged friends computer at work (with permision :innocent: ). It is Intel Celeron 700 MHz, with 256 Mb RAM. I choose primality test as my prefered type of work. And I get exponent for first time primality test (in 20.3M range). Now, I'm not sure if I did good choice. Am I allowed to run first time primality test with machines that have less than 1 GHz?

It will take 208 days to complete current test. I'm OK with that, but can it hurt the project goals?

You can test whatever you want. There is nothing wrong with putting a Celeron on first time testing. If the 208 days completion date puts you off you can try doublechecking or factoring. But that won't find you a prime. At the same time, Celerons are best at factoring.

Its your choice.

What I wouldn't do is delibarately try for small re-released exponents with a machine like that.

I wouldn't do anything deliberately. I leave PrimeNet server to assign exponents to me. :wink:

Then you should be good, as long as you're patient. :cool:

I will be patient because my other machines are in 1.6 GHz range. So I will have lots of exponents tested in those 208 days, with other machines. :grin: This small Celeron is just small addition to my fleet. It's better that it crunch one exponent in 208 days than not crunching anything. :wink:

Make sure you do backups every now and then.

I plan to copy files every week, or every two week, just in case something happens to friend's machine, or in case he get new one.

I'm not quite sure what files I should copy so I can resume work on some other machine if anything happens to this one?

Copy the pxxxxxxx and qxxxxxxx files. These are the progress files, with qxxxxxxx being the backup.

You might also copy the .ini files and the results.txt file.

Because it is a celeron (with 128kbytes of L2 cashe right?) it will be slower on larger exponents compared to a P3 @ 700mhz. I would recommend making it do Double Check work, because it would have more throughput that way.

I think it is wise to follow your advice. Especialy if that could be more helpful to the project. So I change prefered assignments for that machine to double checking.
