Rounding Error
I recently screwed up and when win7 rebooted my bios asked if I wanted to start with my regular settings or the default setting; I clicked default. I had been OC my i7/920 but a friend had helped and is unavailable. So I decided to try it myself with some articles I downloaded.
Well I thought I had it but then when I ran Prime95 I started having these error's: "FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4 Hardware failure detected" I reset all sorts of settings and kept getting the same error. I then said crap and reset the bios to default and I still get the same error although a little latter in the cycle. Any suggestions? Thanks Rick S. |
Try Memtest http://www.memtest.org/
If it is a memory issue, it should spot it. What are the temps on the machine? |
Temps aren't a problem; highest is 61C.
What is a sensor movement test anyhow, if you know. By the way if I don't stop Prime it will go to BSOD! This system has been rock stable at 3.6 Ghz for 6 months. I went to bring it out of sleep mode and it reset somehow. I screwed up by selecting the reset to default option on the bios. |
Memtest 86+ is a good place to start; you can get a bootable CD ISO from the site listed by uncwilly.
If you get any errors from memtest, the first thing I would check is RAM voltage and timings. Check with RAM maker for the correct values for those particular modules. Also, I don't recommend going over 1.65V for DDR3 RAM on Intel machines. |
Thanks guys.
I don't think I have a temp problem as my highest processor temp under stress is 61c. I'll try the mem test but I must say that looks a long shot. This system has been running at 3.6ghz for about 6 months with no problems until I selected reset the bios to default by mistake earlier today. RickS, as I know, the RAM voltage, recomended for i7, is 1.5V... (Personally I use 1.5V RAM sticks with my i7-920)
|
I am not real literate on OC; are you saying I have the wrong memory?
|
I think he means that you have to lower the voltage for the RAM.
|
I never had a problem before I OC'd; then it ran great until today, what voltage needs changing?
Sorry, I really don't understand, that memory was supposedly matched to the system when I ordered it. Actually it was the recommended memory for the board and processor. |
Really need to run memtest.
Memory manufacturers make their modules to run at a specific combination of speed and voltage. Your RAM might run fine at lower speeds at lower voltages, (like 1333MHz on 1.5V) but to run at 1600MHz it will need the correct voltage for that speed (in this case 1.65V). Intel advised that 1.65V is the max you should use on i7 processors (more and you could damage the memory controller). The BIOS can incorrectly select a voltage that is too low for the configured speed; that leads to memory errors. |
Okay, where in the BIOS do I check/change.

Looks like under Ai Tweaker. |
Sorry I wasn't clear, I am familiar with the AI tweaker, which setting is wrong?
btw I am running the DRAM Bus Voltage at 1.66V per this link http:/www.clunk.org.uk/forums/overclocking/22106-core-17-overclocking-guide-begginers.html |
