40 questions round 2

The rules as they currently stand:

1.) 4 hour sit-outs instead of 24.
2.)Strictly question, answer, question, answer ... A "yes" answer means you get to ask another question. If you don't ask again within 8 hours someone else can step in.
3.)The only other comments allowed are suggested changes to the rules or requests for rule clarifications.

I'll start with "Animal".

Use caution in your questions, here be dragons.

science_man_88 2010-11-16 22:29

1) is it a chordate ?

Mini-Geek 2010-11-16 22:31
1) is it a chordate ?
Note: we should be careful of taking the answer to this too literally, since it's very possible that it is not a living animal, (e.g. a cow or fish) but anything that is mainly animal-sourced (e.g. milk, wool sweater).
Perhaps it would be a good idea, every 5-10 questions, to ask if the last 5-10 answers were actually relevant. Would that question be allowed?

Uncwilly 2010-11-16 22:33
1) is it a chordate ?
I will answer yes. Your question is flawed and I could have properly answered no and been factually correct. Yes, gives you the answer to the question you should have asked instead.

Edit: This being only the opening salvo in round 2 is why you earned this grace. Later on, no mercy.

science_man_88 2010-11-16 22:38

2) is it man made ?

Uncwilly 2010-11-16 22:40
Perhaps it would be a good idea, every 5-10 questions, to ask if the last 5-10 answers were actually relevant. Would that question be allowed?
Yes, but it would count toward the total.

Uncwilly 2010-11-16 22:41
2) is it man made ?
Yes.

science_man_88 2010-11-16 22:44

3) does it being made involve a mammal (not man) ?

Uncwilly 2010-11-16 22:52
3) does it being made involve a mammal (not man) ?
Yes.

I would suggest that a new rule be added:
"Pedantry is mandatory, not optional."

science_man_88 2010-11-16 22:56

4) is it made from a placental mammal ?

Uncwilly 2010-11-16 23:05
4) is it made from a placental mammal ?
You need to capitalize the start of your sentences.
Yes

science_man_88 2010-11-16 23:12

5)Is it made from a carnivore ?

Uncwilly 2010-11-16 23:27

No.

Mini-Geek 2010-11-16 23:32

6) Is it usually made from either a cow or sheep? (if yes, I cede the next question to the next poster)

Uncwilly 2010-11-16 23:34
6) Is it usually made from either a cow or sheep?
Yes.

gjmccrac 2010-11-17 02:06

7) Is it intended to be eaten?
7) Is it intended to be eaten?
Yes

gjmccrac 2010-11-17 04:13

8) Is it made from a sheep's stomach or intestines?

only_human 2010-11-17 06:21

9) Would it be served at a Burns Supper? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burns_supper

Uncwilly 2010-11-17 07:04

I inadvertently answer 7 incorrectly:
7) Is it intended to be eaten?
The answer should be No.

lavalamp 2010-11-17 09:26

With this correction, I suppose questions 8 and 9 are thrown out as they follow on from it.

In that case:
8) Is/are the animal(s) killed during the process of making this object?

Uncwilly 2010-11-17 13:27
8) Is/are the animal(s) killed during the process of making this object?
No.

Brian-E 2010-11-17 13:43

9) Is it typically carried around or worn as clothing by humans?

1) is it a chordate ? yes
2) is it man made ? Yes.
3) does it being made involve a mammal (not man) ? Yes.
4) is it made from a placental mammal ? Yes

10) Is it made from something that would naturally be excreted as waste from the animal?
(Not sure where this is going.)
10) Is it made from something that would naturally be excreted as waste from the animal?
No.

lavalamp 2010-11-18 00:33

Hm, I'm wondering if when the answer for 7 was changed from yes to no, that was just a simple mistake or ... pedantry dun dun DUUUUUN. If the answer were milk for instance, then TECHNICALLY, the answer would be no.

If it is not for humans to eat OR drink, then it could still be used by some humans if it was something like bovine insulin. I'm not sure if that can be extracted without killing the animal, but I would assume so.

If it is not for any kind of human consumption, then I'm thinking it could be manure.

Edit: I guess it's not manure then.

As we are 1/3 of the way in, I will let you all know that there is one question (beside the first) that was poorly asked. The answer given was to the question asked, not to what the asker meant.

Mini-Geek 2010-11-18 14:29
As we are 1/3 of the way in, I will let you all know that there is one question (beside the first) that was poorly asked. The answer given was to the question asked, not to what the asker meant.
14) Are you referring to ((question 7) OR (question 10) OR (question 11) OR (question 13))?

Here are my notes for why I'm singling these ones out:
"7) Is it intended to be eaten?" As already mentioned, but mostly rejected by his brain fart comment, there's a chance it's still for human consumption.
"10) Is it made from something that would naturally be excreted as waste from the animal?" manure might fit this since it's not made from a waste product, but is a waste product; if you stretch the definition of #2 and aren't sure of the answer to #7, manure might still be valid.
"11) Is it used to produce sound when blow?" should be "blown", so he could've answered no to "blow" when "blown" would've made a yes, plus we don't know if it's intended to make sound another way, like plucking a string.
"13) Is it a medical product?" not sure of the definition of "medical product" assumed, but it might not be the same one intended.

If the answer is a yes, we have it narrowed to 4 questions, if no, it's still narrowed to 8.

Brian-E 2010-11-19 01:50

Two possible thoughts occur to me concerning the rogue question which Uncwilly answered literally rather than in the way the questioner meant.

It might have been question 9 (my question ) because not everything which is "worn" is clothing. For example leather shoes: but question 8 would seem to rule them out.

Or it might have been question 8 because maybe the cow is already dead before the object can be made (for example, gelatine).

I'll try the second idea out with this question:

15) Is it made, at least partly, from cows' bones and/or internal organs?

Uncwilly 2010-11-19 02:13
15) Is it made, at least partly, from cows' bones and/or internal organs?
No.

axn 2010-11-19 02:23

16) Is it directly derived from an animal [as opposed to something that is the output of further processing after extracting something from said animal]?

Regardless of the answer, someone else can take up the next q.
BTW, you are not likely to ever have had raw milk.
Another clue! You seem to be thinking of some finished product ready for sale to the general public rather than what a farm might produce.
I guess we already know it isn't human milk. And the rabbit is probably a red herring. But the pancake...? Hmm.
Well, we still have plenty of questions.

17) Is it made, at least partly, from skin, horn or hooves of an animal?

Wacky 2010-11-19 12:17
Another clue! You seem to be thinking of some finished product ready for sale to the general public rather than what a farm might produce.
BEWARE. His comment may well be a commentary on your ability to formulate pedantically accurate questions and not at all related to the material that you are attempting to identify.

No doubt it was. Though of course what someone literally says can also reveal other thought processes, and in this case we are definitely trying to read his mind.

Still, don't take my comments too seriously, they were meant to be light hearted.

viz. milk, curd, ghee, urine and dung. is what I found for cow products on one website, All but three are basically eliminated that I know of. I don't believe leather is truly knocked out as it doesn't have to be completely rigid.

So it's definitely narrowed to something on this page that's not in the Bone, Horn, Hooves, & Gelatin, or Hide & Hair categories. I think leather might be the answer. Question 8 says "killed during the process of making this object", and arguably the animals are killed well before the process of making leather begins (question 8 was not eliminated by question 14, so it's possible he gave the hint regarding that question). And as already mentioned, question 9 might exclude shoes. Some leather products are mentioned in the Hide & Hair category, but not leather as a generality.

Nothing is too certain, but remember "17) Is it made, at least partly, from skin, horn or hooves of an animal? Yes." That would seem to most likely eliminate everything from that category. I just think that leather, or some leather product, is a very likely candidate.

Oops, no comments ...
24) (Is it) OR (is it at least partly made from) skin of a cow?
Yes.

I am assuming that you mean all members of the species (plural, the normally kept bovines): male and female, not just the female.

BTW, we still have a ways to go (not just the 16 questions.)

science_man_88 2010-11-20 19:48

I'm stumped the things I see on the page are:

beef
dairy
clothes
leather
cowhide
protein
Combs
gelatin candy (Gummy Bears)
marshmallows
mayonnaise
gelatin
photographic film
steel ball bearings with bone charcoal,
fine bone china,
pet food,
and vitamin capsules/gel coatings.
Insulation,
paint brushes,
glue for bookmaking
and band aids,
clothes,
shoes,
luggage,
saddles,
furniture,
automobiles,
volleyballs,
basketballs,
and baseball gloves.
Shampoo,
soaps,
shaving creams,
cosmetics,
deodorants,
candles,
crayons,
floor wax,
detergents,
hydraulic break fluid,
plastics,
insecticides,
paints,
perfumes,
and synthetic rubber.

protein is listed in the part about leather,
dark red = unknown for me,
yellow = probably all knocked out but one question makes me doubt it,
red= knocked out.
