Visitor counter

Hello,

The counter at the bottom of the page seems to be stuck at 43112609. I don't think it's ever changed since the first time I visited this forum. Does anybody know why?

At least, I *ASSUME* that it's a visitor counter. Knowing this forum, it could be a prime number.

It says

"Most users ever online: 2^43,112,609-1 on 23 Aug 08"

It is a prime number, the greatest so far, found on 2008-08-23 and it's only a gimmick of the forum admins and not a real counter!

Ahh, I suspected something was up with that, thanks!

You might also notice that XYZZY's post count never changes.

Infinity, how about that! He does enough work around here to qualify.

But surely, like the number of prime numbers, the number of his posts must be a "smaller" infinity than the infinity of all integers...

There is nothing to say the number at the bottom of each page is a counter of any type. It is simply presented as a number with no surrounding text to say otherwise.

BUT, did you notice that the number is also a link? The link actually leads you to an explanation of what it means.

There is also another number at the bottom, 11. Can you guess the reference there? It has been mentioned on this forum before

retina,

I do remember reading recently around here about that knob being deliberately set to 11. (Although now I can't remember what the significance of it was.) Knowing that was actually what got me wondering if the 43112609 might not be what I first thought it was.

But they way it's designed, it did look like a counter to me. Above and below the numbers, you can see what appear to be the edges of the numbers that precede and follow each of them, as if they were numbers that could click up like a hand clicker.

However, my cursor hadn't made its way over the number to show the link. Very interesting, thanks! I learn something new on this forum almost every day.

I think that '11 knob' is showing some kind of status, which 1 is the lowest and 11 is the highest...

Ah! Maybe it could be telling about the 11th year of vBulletin (If we can see at other forums)

A knob that goes to 11 is from the movie Spinal Tap. They had the knobs for their amps going to 11 because it would be that much louder.
