Countdown to testing all exponents below M(42643801) once: 96

Soon we have tested all exponents below all the known primes once. This have not happened since July 25th 2001 to November 14th 2001 when all exponents below M(6972593) was tested once before M(13466917) was found.

The only other time without first time milestone was September 26th 1998 to June 1st 1999 when all exponents below M(3021377) was tested once before M(6972593) was found.

Except for the notorious reputation of this project to take a LONG time on the last few assignments.

i.e. the last few below 40M (now 16) has only dropped by 4 in the last 3 months

I believe [url=http://www.mersenneforum.org/showthread.php?t=16422]this[/url] might be of interest. Of the 120 or so left below M47, the vast majority of those are owned by curtisc, and have been lost in P-1-MaxHighMemWorkers-dance-hell-purgatory. That is to say, they're all waiting to begin S2 P-1. As soon as we get this worked out, those numbers should drop quickly.

As for the ones that aren't curtisc, I suggest that for all remaining below M47, or even below 45M, should, instead of being just 'preferred' exponents, only be released to those who meet some stricter criteria, like 'Top 100 LL for lat year' or 'active MersenneForum participant' or any other criteria that would churn them through in the next few months. But of course this is up to George.

(Also petrw1, at the time of this post, it has gone up to [b]4[/b] in the last three months :smile:)

You'll no doubt notice that, as close as is possible, there are [I]e[/I] thousand exponents remaining below the M42 milestone, and pi hundred thousand exponents remaining below the M46 milestone. Of course, things have improved since then, but I thought that it was quite a coincidence that [I]e[/I] and pi came up like this at the same time.

Actually, 100 000*pi = 3141592... which rounds to 314159.

Also Google reports e as
2.71828183 =/= 2.828...

(Insert requisite comment about base 10 representations of the countdown and e/pi, or equivalently, the special significance of pi/e*10^x. [Insert requisite comment about how e/pi and pi/e could be easily misinterpretated, as well as the reasonable alternative e-pi/pi-e. Now I'm just throwing the -blam!- at the fan. :smile:])

Heavens to Betsy. I promise, I really do have an advanced math degree. When looking at "2828", no doubt, I was thinking of the first few *digits* of e: 2.71828, but just forgot about the "71". Oh well, not so exciting then.

As for the pi milestone, I had a screen shot at 314,159, but then lost it when I accidentally refreshed the milestones page. So 314,158 had to be close enough for government work.

In other news, with GPUto72 mowing down the exponents, all of the milestone paces have been picking up as of late. Linear regression based on YTD 2012 data puts the M46 and M47 milestones back within 2017; they had drifted into mid-2018 based on last year's data.

I think the lower limits are much higher, in fact there is nothing under 24052939, which is NOT doublechecked. There are some assignments, like 22985741, 23492803, 23492849, 23493721, 23494547, 23562067 and 24029771 which are not completed, but they are "triple checks", because they took too long and some curious guys poached them in the meantime and completed the doublechecks.
