Womenz in the forumz?
I'm just curious: Are there any current women members in the forum? Secondly, how many have there ever been in the forum?
I would be impressed with by any woman who could tolerate us for an extended period of time. |

A quick search brings up this thread:

Interesting. Nearly all of the Lauren's on this list are female: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lauren |

I don't think women have to tolerate 'us' (I can't speak about your manners of course) - I hope you're not thinking about discrimating (Mersenne) guys in general. |

lol I had a feeling I'd open a can of worms there. What I mean is that, being a mostly male forum, many of us have a tendency to express ourselves in a not very nice way. Myself included in that category. To avoid offending the masses, note the term "many of us", not "all of us". In other words, there's not a lot of "gentle feelings" being expressed around here. :-) Oddball, to the best of my knowledge NPLB has had no female crunchers but there are a couple of IDs in our recent rally that I'm not familiar with that do not make it very clear. I had not seen the previous forum link about women on GIMPS. It's nice to know that there are a few around, even if they aren't particularly active on Mersenneforum. |

How do you know that, some of us don't try to project a male image on this site, while being biologically female. Men frequently do the same on-line. If I were Danica McKeller, I would assume an identity while visiting this forum.

Ok, I've never read/heard this name so I searched for it and found more likely this one! |
I think I spotted a heterosexual in Brighton the other day.

Well, you never read in a women's forum? They aren't that nice either. I don't think men have to change their behavior just because women are around. Women aren't doing it for men, either. |
This thread somehow came to mind again while I was browsing through a list of top 5000 prime finders. A quick look through it reveals 6 possible women: Kathy Pham, Amy Chambers, Catherine Goffin, Mary Hogan, Michelle Oliver, and Sue Maddern:
http://primes.utm.edu/bios/page.php?id=2971 http://primes.utm.edu/bios/page.php?id=962 http://primes.utm.edu/bios/page.php?id=3071 http://primes.utm.edu/bios/page.php?id=2443 http://primes.utm.edu/bios/page.php?id=1125 http://primes.utm.edu/bios/page.php?id=2999 You might find one or two more, but the real challenge is finding more women prime finders than prime finders whose last name is Johnson (there are 9 of them on the list). |
C'mon, we all know that there are no wimminz on teh internets.

I would remind my fellow Romans that women used to be personae non grata in the Forvm:
During the years of the Roman Republic, women had no political rights. They were not allowed to vote, directly address the Senate, nor mill about in the forum. Respectable women who spent time in public places were frowned upon. Nonetheless, there were times when women used the power of public protest to get what they wanted. One was the demonstration of women against the Oppian Law. Another ws Hortensia's speech to the forum. The Oppian Law was passed following the disastrous defeat of the Romans by Hannibal at the battle of Cannae (216 B.C.). Because of the wars with Carthage, many men had died. Their wives and daughters had inherited their lands and monies, allowing many women to become quite rich. The state, in order to help pay for the cost of the wars, decided to tap into women's wealth by passing the Oppian Law. It limited the amount of gold women could possess and required that all the funds of wards, single women, and widows be deposited with the state. Women also were forbidden to wear dresses with purple trim (the color of mourning and a grim reminder of Rome's losses). Nor could they ride in carriages within Rome or in towns near Rome. Roman women obeyed these restriction with little fuss. Yet, at the end of the successful Second Punic War in 201 B.C., male Romans and women in towns beyond Rome again donned their rich clothing and rode about in carriages. Women in Rome, however, continued to be denied these luxuries because of the Oppian Law. With the end of the wars, upper class women chafed at these continuing restrictions and now wished to keep their inherited money for their own use. In 195 B.C., some members of the Tribunal proposed eliminating the Oppian Law. Women throughout Rome kept an eye on these proceedings. When it seemed that the majority of Tribunal was about to veto the proposed repeal, they poured into the streets in protest. It was the first time anything by women on a scale such as this was seen in Rome. As a result of the women's protest, the tribunes withdrew their veto and approved the repeal.
To co-opt the longtime marketing-to-the-ladies slogan from a well-known cigarette maker, "You've come a long way, infans". Gone are the days of "Romani mulieribus eunt domum". ---- [Aside to rude-Robert: Isn't it spelt 'pvssy'?] |
I am being curious enough as to whether there have been some lady members inside, in this forum, thereby ...
|
I believe trif is female, but she hasn't posted for a long time. I know of no active female members for sure, but of course some women may choose not to reveal their gender and maleness seems to get taken for granted - which is of course rather sexist!
I do know of a couple, both of whom are members here. But they're both men. |
