BSOD I Get Illegal Sumout ?? Very Confused?
 

I have been getting the BSOD about once a week for the last 8 weeks or so. ASUS told me that the BSOD usually means a memory problem. I ran Memtest86 v. 4.10 for about 2 hours and no errors were detected. I then ran Prime95 v. 25.11 and about 90 minutes into the tortue test I keep getting an error message that repeats until it is timed out. ERROR: ILLEGAL SUMOUT.

I built this computer myself:

Antec 300 Mid Tower Case
Antec TP-650 Power Supply (650 Watts)
Asus P5Q SE Plus MB (With The Latest BIOS Version)
Kingston HyperX RAM 1066Mhz (1gb x 2) from the QVL
Intel cpu E8400
Sony Optical Drive
9800GT PCI-E 2.0x16 Nvidia Graphics Card
WD3000HLFS 300GB Raptor HDD
5 - 120MM CASE FANS
Artic Silver 5 Thermal Paste

The only change I made to BIOS was that I set the Dram Frequency to 1066. Thats It.

Everything was purchased NEW by me and everthing is less than 1 year old. I am Running Windows 7 Ultimate (32bit)

NO OVERCLOCKING OF ANY KIND

When I ran Prime95 I disconnected everything from the computer except the ethernet cable, DVI Video Cable and the USB mouse and keyboard. I ran CPUID HWMONITOR during the testing in order to monitor my temps.

IDLE TEMPS:
System: 39 (Centigrade)
CPU: 36
CPU Core Temps: 47 (Both Cores)

100% Load (After 10min)
System: 40
CPU: 54
CPU Core Temps: 63 (Both Cores)

Should I RMA the MB or RAM or CPU or WHAT???

I have run Prime95 once a day for 5 days now and it always comes up with an Error. Sometimes after 10min sometimes after 90min or longer.

Whenever the BSOD screen appears I re-boot my computer and it behaves fine for about a week or so until it appears again.

I am very frustrated.

The memtest program is not torturing the computer (memory, mem controller, m/b) the way Prime95 does. There are many things that may need to be tested for the diagnosis.

Try this: in BIOS, downclock the memory, then run torture for a day. If it doesn't crash or complain, then proceed with clocking back to standard speed in steps. Don't take for granted that memory always "feels" itself comfortable; at the factory, it was pushed to its limit, stepped a bit back and sold with these parameters (a.k.a. binning). If you want to go for RMA trouble, weigh the options; it is entirely possible that the replacement memory will behave exactly the same. Or they will tell that their tests passed and they will send it back to you.

One possible problem may be overheating of the memory. A small memory fan may or may not help (it will move its comfort limit a bit forward, which may be enough for the life of the computer).

To start, I don't overclock. The reason being I never learned. Too time consuming and I really don't have the time to learn it well. I am basically your default kind of guy. Everytime I run Prime95 it shows me an error. It never gets past about 90min each and every time I run it. I haven't goten the BSOD in a few days now but just when I think it will never show up again it rears it's ugly head. During normal everday use (I am not a gamer) there are no HOT or even warm components in my case. Everything feels cool or very slightly warm to the touch. I have 5 -120mm case fans. The exhaust air leaving the case is cool.

I have Ai Tweaker in my Bios. Everything is set to AUTO except the Dram Frequency which is set to 1066. The dram timing control says: 5-5-5-18-3-52-6-3 (I have no idea what these numbers mean) This is the model # of my Kingston (2x1gb) RAM: KHX8500D2K2/2GN The timing is 5-5-5-15 voltage 2.2 v

With it, check the actual voltage on the memory.

Unfortunately, you will probably have to RMA your memory or run it at a lower speed (e.g. 800) to eliminate the Illegal Sumout error messages. I have two dedicated PCs with GSkill DDR2 1066 memory which [I]barely[/I] run Prime95 at its rated speed (i.e. 1066) even with the ram voltage set to 2.2 volts (max for the MBs). [U]This memory had zero problems at 800[/U].

At 1066 it gives me [U]immediate[/U] Illegal Sumout errors when I run other applications alongside my Prime95 LL, DC, and or P-1 processes. For example, in order to submit results to the Prime95 server, I have to stop Prime95 and change the Worktodo.txt file so that all cores are doing TF work [U]before[/U] I start my Juno dial up networking application to log onto the Internet. This is annoying but it works and it gives me noticeably better iteration times. I hope this helps you debug your memory "issues".

The Auto setting will not give that since it is outside JDEC specifications. You really have to find in the BIOS where the setting about RAM voltage is and change it.

Batalov, PCWizard does not indicate at which voltage the memory is run, only at which voltage it is specified to run (the SPD profile information.)

PC Wizard says the memory voltage is SSTL 1.8v BIOS does not state a value for memory voltage. The memory voltage is set to AUTO and to change it I will have to directly enter a value. PC wizard says the type memory I have is DDR2-800 but I know for a fact I have DDR2-1066. Since I don't feel comfortabe changing values in BIOS other than the Dram frequency, I am leaning towards RMA'ing both the MB & Memory since both are under warranty. Let the manufacturers figure it out.

You are right: not in that tab (and not on that server motherboard with FB-DIMMs, but I didn't have any other at hand).

No, this is the usual readings. (Did you think they sold you DDR2-800 memory as DDR-1066? That's right! They did. I am not joking. By SPD, it is a DDR2-800 memory.) Auto voltage is known to follow SPD and not EPP (or JEDEC or whatever), so your memory is undervolted, which keeps it running until it starts to be loaded.

List the exact model of your memory, let's try to figure it out. You should also (or rather, first thing) try the memory manufacturer's forums; they are frequently very helpful and much more specific.
