Second forum sequence?
Various people have suggested doing a second sequence as a forum effort along with 4788. It will delay the effort on 4788, but then again, 1134 looks tempting to me - it's stable, and at 164 digits it's a bit lower than 4788. I always like to find out the general opinion before doing something like this, so here's a poll.
Edit: There is now a new poll, and a new thread (although that is hard to notice). Don't vote on this one if you voted on the new poll on the other thread - I've added the numbers of votes from there. See post 14. If you accidentally do vote because you haven't realised that I've added vote numbers (and thus register a double vote), then just post here to say which option you did this on and one of the mods will remove one vote from that option. |
1134 looks nice but i think it would be nice to compete with aiming to have the longest sequence and largest sequence. The only trouble is the sequences either have drivers or are already reserved.
144984 seems to be free but has a driver although not one of the most persistent drivers 11040 would be tempting if unconnected didn't already have it 842592 would be very tempting if unconnected didn't already have it 556276 would also be tempting but batalov has it it looks like 144984 gets my vote unless someone gifts their sequence to the project or one becomes available at somepoint soon maybe 1134 would be a good sequence to follow for a short while until something better comes along as i would prefer not to have 144984's driver |
What is the lowest sequence that isn't reserved?
|
Could someone check the list of longest sequences for driverless ones? As far as I am aware all of the stable ones (sequences that don't have an upward driver or guide or a 3) above 3000 lines are reserved; that figure may be as low as 2500 lines. There are probably some driverless ones that are not stable that are free; I'd be interested to find out.

552150?
I run 556276, moved it about 200 iterations recently. Too easy for the forum, too.
I have a hiatus on 552150, though, and I have proposed it for the forum already - it is a tough nut, but not that high (with the forum's level of resources), and escaping the driver is even more interesting than picking the low hanging fruit. |
You need another poll option.....I think the forum could handle another one along with 4788, but I don't know which one to pick. I think the more "interesting" choice would be a driverless one, but I guess there is room for a record attempt if there were a suitable target.
I would have a soft spot for 144984, since I moved it those last 500 lines, but I have an idea that 2^5 * 3 * 7 won't be as easy to esacape from as 2^3 * 3 was.
It will delay the effort on 4788
Actually, as the GNFS jobs get bigger, we could be doing the ECM pre-testing on another sequence during the LA.... |
Keeping it quick
I think these would go more quickly if we could agree on some basic practices for reservations, with a view to keeping the reservations easy to read and the post count low in every GNFS/ECM reservation thread.
I propose that we try to avoid making more than two reservations per sieving or ECM run. If you have limited resources, don't sweat it if you end up reserving slightly more than you can complete: reserving 11M-14M but finishing only through 13.7 million won't hurt the factorization. This has many benefits:

Cuts the number of reservation posts
Cuts the number of times the thread is updated
Cuts the number of links the post-processing folks will have to download
As fivemack does in his group factoring threads, we could also delete the reservation and completion posts after noting the results in the initial post of the thread. |

IMHO, completion posts which contain a link to the relations should be kept - just in case if someone needs to re-download them. |
I voted for 1134, but only assuming we could officially get the reservation. If Paul Zimmerman wanted to keep it we shouldn't compete.

I've edited the poll so that it has different options from before, because the original poll didn't lead to anything happening. Hopefully we will be able to decide on a plan of action when the second round of voting is over.
