The best news about it: The pipeline simulator (for Duron, Athlon XP, Opteron, Athlon 64) is included in the application (not only as command line tools) and offers a visualization of the instruction flow in the pipeline as in CodeAnalyst 1.x for Athlon. And it works faster than the old versions when doing simulation.

Hey there dresdenboy. Have you gotten this to work on the GIMPS Opteron? I've tried running tracegen on mprime and it just hangs. Mprime is a 32-bit executable built on my own Linux box.

I had same problems during my tests on the GIMPS Opteron. Maybe it's better to install the 64bit version? Here the 64bit just means that it's thought to run in a 64bit OS (and it would allow to test 64bit mode applications).

Tracegen starts, runs the test app and then it stays in sleep mode without using CPU cycles (test app too). Ctrl-C works a bit, only kill really stops the process.

I'll ask Xyzzy about the 64bit Linux CodeAnalyst.

BTW did you try the windows version (which I described here)?. Browsing through a graphically visualized "score" of pipeline events is just very helpful for spotting inefficiencies.

The 64-bit version is installed... Look in /usr/local/bin for it...

I just tried this on my Pentium 4 Windows XP system. BSOD real fast.

Thanks@Xyzzy

Well, BSOD on P4? Hmm..

BTW, here is an intro to CA: http://www.devx.com/amd/Article/17305

They used a Xeon box and it runs fine. I think it's just a software issue regarding the new beta version.

I'll try the 64bit tracegen now.

CodeAnalyst on the Opteron works now, and it's very fast compared to version 2.1 for Windows.

New release:
CodeAnalyst version 2.2 for Windows is just now released in non-beta.

As for CodeAnalyst Version 2.1 for Linux, it says that it supports the version 2.4 kernel series on x86 architecture; earlier 2.2 series kernels are not supported. 64-bit Linux on x86_64 architecture is supported.

Actually I am unsure of exact version release history. I am on a mailing list from AMD that in an email today mentions a new release. On their site, both versions of CodeAnalyst (Windows and Linux) seem to no longer mention having beta status.
The Windows version help->about screen is for Version 2.2 CodeAnalyst 2.26.1.0.
The accompanying help documentation release history mentions only two v2.2 beta releases but does not mention anything later.

The downloaded self-installing executable for Windows is version 2.26.1.178. The installed executable files have a creation date of Nov 3, 2003.

My previously downloaded self-installing executable for Windows was beta and was version 2.22.3.172.

Did some of you encounter problems when using CA on a P4?

only_human 2003-11-27 21:21

Actually I have only run it on an Athlon and an Athlon XP. Even then I haven't really used it. I am just nosing around, getting tools organized. I did a lot of assembly language programming in the 80's and early 90's but not much since.
