Speed issues...

I am exchanging emails with our support engineer about the database lag we are experiencing... If possible, if you have a real slow load time, post it here so I can show him...

The relevant information is at the bottom of each page...

Given that our database is so small, anything over 1 second can be considered "bad"...

Please don't post all of them you experience, just the worst...

Thanks!

Here are a few I got just since I posted that first message...

After exchanging what seems like hundreds of emails, the support engineer is convinced that our database needs to be "optimised"... I went ahead and did that, and the BBS seems to be back up to speed... I hope that solved the problem...

Anyways, they provide a button to optimise it, but I'd rather do it from the command line... Could someone tell me how to do this? I'm logged in to the database right now and I have a "mysql>" prompt...

I tried reading the MySQL documentation, but it is a little more complicated than what I am used to, which is dBase!

You dont like using phpmyadmin?

Xyzzy 2002-08-18 15:26

Hmm... I've seen that program mentioned before...

I'll have to check it out... I do prefer doing things via the command line, just because I am used to it... But anything is better than the vague buttons they offer to me on the admin page...

Thanks!

You should really check out phpmyadmin. :)

Its really easy to use, yet hugely powerful.

By the way, since you are using GZIP I might ask what level of compression are you at now? I am not too sure if phpbb lets you choose the level of gzip compression since I am more familier with VBulletin than phpbb. However, if it lets you to choose, dont choose the level too high as it is a waste on CPU yet very little savings in terms of bandwidth. Usually there is 0-9 levels of compression, 9 being maximum compressed. Normally we consider 1 is being enough. Anything above 2 is a waste on CPU.

Hope this helps.

This BBS does not let me choose the level... I always use "-9" when I gzip stuff from the command prompt... For me, it is only a bit slower than "-1", unless it is an ISO... Then it really bogs down...

Ya, but imagine that little bit slower time however many hits per minute you expect the forum to get, and you get a rather large problem. :)

Stormblade 2002-08-19 00:28

Oh, BTW, in browsing the forum today, so far it has "hung" twice.. waiting for data for an unreasonably long time (several minutes) if I hit refresh it will come thru OK, and of course the time at the bottom is good, because it was a new request...

[edit]
got this one right after posting this, and returning to topic list.

phpBB Created this page in 3.452177 seconds : 13 queries executed : GZIP compression enabled

It looked like it was going to hang, but popped up after a couple seconds..
