Real-time chat...
 

We are beta testing a real-time chat system... The link is at the bottom of every forum page... It should support just about any web browser out there, including Lynx... Please stop by and test it out and post any feedback you have here...

Note that the chat uses a different registration system than the forum, so you will have to register again... For safety, I suggest you use a different password than your forum password until it is thoroughly debugged for security holes...

... the Chat system told me to wait for my password mailed to me... still waiting for that mail now. Perhaps the mail stopped for a beer on the ride to germany :smile:

We've had 2 people log in so far so I think the mail is working properly... Maybe your spam filter blocked or deleted it?

... now it is here. Took more then 6 minutes to reach my mail-provider from thenge.pair.com. Was a quick beer then ;)

Seems okay to me so far. Got my password promptly. Logged in. Listened to echoes in empty room. Left. No probs.

Seems redundant to me, but I'm an UnderNet regular already....

Seems to work ok with FireBird 0.7.

Lot's of problems.

Got the new password OK. But because it is the same website, my browser doesn't like to auto fill two different values. (Can you change the field name so that it is different from the main forum)

I tried a couple of times and got nothing but a white screen. I thought Xyzzy might not have actually been there at that early hour. Finally, I tried the alternate login choice and actually saw some text. Still, no one is responding. I guess they are not REALLY present.

The browser reloading all the time causes a horribly distracting flash on my screen.

Personally, I don't see any value here. Why waste the bandwidth?

It is unclear to me that your "parking" there has any value to anyone but yourself. In my case, it certainly has had NEGATIVE value.

Perhaps you need some mechanism that allows a distinction between "active" participants and "lurkers". I'm not suggesting that there is anything wrong with either mode, but failing to differentiate is yet another reason why I don't consider this a good "community" solution. There already exist solutions for "chat communities" that, IMHO, are far superior.

Let's keep the community, but forget this particular implementation.

I agree that most people won't bother to pop in there on a regular basis...

One other possibility might be if someone is having trouble in the forum and as a solution someone might say, "Hey, meet me in the chat at 8PM EST and we'll work through it!"...

I agree there are better chat solutions... The only advantage this one has is that it runs from a web browser, and we own it...

It doesn't cost us anything to have it, but if other people find it to be a nuisance we'll kick it to the curb...
