Opteron web server...

I *think* I have the web server on the Opteron up and running... I need you all to test it... Point your web browser to:

http://opteron.mersenneforum.org/

Right now I have mirrored mersenne.org's FTP directory...

Please try to "torture test" this setup...

Assuming that everything works, what should we put here?

I could easily cron a wget script to mirror that FTP site every night, or maybe we could put something more interesting there?

We have a lot of storage space, but the upload is limited to around 40KB/s I think...

Thanks!

How about an enhanced stats site?

Ummm, won't having a web server on this box play havoc with trying to get accurate timings for Opteron-optimized assembly code?

Linux boxes typically have piles of services running in the background... I've measured the load when httpd is running, serving a pile of pages, and it is almost unmeasurable...

I suppose the best way to do it would be to run locally with all networking turned off (single user mode) but since we remote into it that isn't possible...

In fact, the sshd process uses easily 10x more CPU time than httpd...

That said, if the httpd process needed to be turned off, a simple "apachectl stop" would do the trick...

An idea...

We could use it to archive all the old status files for data analysis purposes?

We could toss in a big hard drive that we could set as the default "folder" for apache... (I'm not sure how long it would take to fill up 80GB or more!)

I've seen 80GB hard drives locally for around $60-70... My friend even got a 160GB one for $100, after rebates...

Just trolling for ideas...

In several years we'll probably have commercial terabyte drives...

If anyone has old copies of the status and cleared files lying around (anything before, say, mid-September), maybe it would be useful to preserve copies of these. I'd be interested in these.

I have copies going back to last year. I have approximately 1-2 copies per month.

I also have a bunch of these (and also the producer rank list) going back a year or so at varying frequency. I save them with a name that includes the date so I can keep many versions. They take many megabytes, but storage is very cheap.

It would be nice to collect and save a bunch of these online somewhere.

It would also be nice if new ones got automatically saved at some agreed frequency from now on. Then those of us who sometimes mine data from the past wouldn't have to save our own anymore.

I unfortunately don't have time to volunteer to be the 'librarian' for this, but can certainly donate my collection. I suspect that we could get a fairly good past history with donations from other data freaks too!

Is there money left over to get a large disk to store this? Actually, it's not really that demanding. All three lists total 10-15 MB, so one per day for several years is manageable. And they zip to much smaller size.

So who wants to start the collection?

Xyzzy 2003-10-20 20:52

We have plenty of room for now on the hard drive we have... Adding one in the future will be very easy...

I'd be willing to get the library started until we find a permanent librarian... I'd need a bit of help figuring out what reports people want and scripting the server to get them...

Before we do anything I'd like George to let us know if this is okay, since it is his box and only he knows how something like this may or may not affect his timings... (I suspect the hit will be unmeasurable, but I'd feel better with his blessing!)

Store any data you like.
