4.5 quake overnight in the east SF bay — We had a good shaking on the opposite side of the bay, I was in bed watching late-night TV, thought it was my upstairs neighbor falling out of bed - because I think he did when the quake hit. When I got up this morning there were (and still are, but less so) dozens of little ants scurrying all over my desktop next to an exterior wall and the windowsill just above it. At first I was unsure whether that was due to the quake or the anomalous warm-up we had overnight (high jumped from 60F yesterday to 70 today) due to being sandwiched between a pair of rainy fronts off the Pacific. But we’ve had plenty of near-70 days this winter (4th-driest december on record), so I’m guessing it must be quake-related.

There are reports of damage but no casualties in Oaxaca after a strong 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck at 5:39pm CT with an epicenter near the city of Pinotepa Nacional.

The quake was felt as far away as Mexico City, setting off seismic alarms and sending citizens rushing into the streets.

It was followed by a second quake at 6:36, which the National Seismological Service said in a preliminary report measured 5.9.
I'm in NoCal (20 mi N of GG Bridge), and was outside at my town's July 4th parade, didn't feel a thing. It would take a very large SoCal quake or a rupture along a long section of north-south-running fault complex to be felt here. OTOH, one can very clearly see the San Andreas fault running NNW a few miles west of my locale (Novato) on a map:

VBCurtis 2019-07-04 20:52

I'm about 150km south of epicenter; I heard it as a rattle, then felt a bump or two. The sort of motion that leaves no doubt it's a quake, but isn't otherwise startling. No items shifted in the house, far from that level of motion here.

The epicenter is way out in the Mojave desert, very few people nearby.

There was some recent activity leading from Yellowstone down toward the area of today's quake.

I happen to be in the area and have experienced other quakes of smaller and larger sizes over the years, often closer. This one did not have the initial jolt where I was (within 5km of Caltech) at the time. It was a real back and forth roller.

In the early 1980's, I experienced a minor bit of trembling from the July 27, 1980 magnitude 5.1 earthquake near Sharpsburg, KY, which was several hundred miles away from where I was, in my office, on the third floor.

At first, it seemed like a bit of vibration. I thought a truck was going by. The vibration continued, and I looked outside on the street. No truck.

The vibration progressed to a kind of rocking and shaking. A large wooden book case in my office, full of books and with glassed panels in front to keep out dust, began to wobble back and forth. I knew it must be an earthquake. I didn't feel panicky, but I remember freezing in place, desperately trying to decide whether to go over to the book case and steady it, or get out of its path should it fall. After a couple of more wobbles, I decided I had time to go over and steady it, and did so.

When the book case stopped trying to rock back and forth, I went out to check on what else might have happened. A guy in another office said his door had been ajar when the quake started, and started swinging jerkily on its hinges.

I later heard from someone who'd happened to have clothes drying in the back yard. They were doing a "line dance" during the quake.

Curiously, some years later I experienced an extremely minor quake, as subsequently reported on the news. (I can't remember the magnitude, but I think it was between 3 and 4.)

I felt a vague "unsteadiness" but no real shaking. Nonetheless, the sensation threw me into a panic. I tried to fight off the sense of terror at impending doom by thinking, "this must be an earthquake, but a really minor one." It did help, but, despite the vagueness of the physical sensation, it is no exaggeration to say that it left me shaken.

Another good one is in reply to the common suspense-drama line "can I ask you just one question?", to counter with "I think you just did."

No more "swimming pool slosh meter" like I had at my previous address in the S Bay (Cupertino), but based on past experience I guessed M4-5; the local news said first-look data was M2.5, which I knew was way too low.
A true Californian. Did you try to guess direction and distance too?
Per Wikipedia, "On average, the kilometer distance to the earthquake is the number of seconds between the P and S wave times 8." So if my 2-3 sec difference guesstimate was about right, figure ~16-24 km. I'll let you look up th distance between Novato and Walnut Creek and tell me if that's within a factor 2.

Direction ... that seems rather more difficult. One could build a cheap home version of that famous ancient Chinese quake-o-meter, which used a ring of delicately balanced bronze balls, supposedly the pattern of balls which drop allows one to infer direction. Probably amounts to a way of gauging the transverse-motion component of the S-waves.

TAGAYTAY, Philippines (AP) — Red-hot lava gushed out of a volcano near the Philippine capital on Monday, as tens of thousands of people fled the area through heavy ash and frightening tremors. Experts warned that the eruption could get worse and plans were being made to evacuate hundreds of thousands more.

Clouds of ash blew more than 100 kilometers (62 miles) north of the Taal volcano on Sunday, reaching Manila, the bustling capital, and forcing the shutdown of the country’s main airport, with more than 500 flights canceled. The airport was partially reopened Monday after the ashfall eased.

There have been no reports of casualties or major damage so far. A truck, however, skidded out of control and fell on its side on an ash-blanketed road, killing the driver and injuring three companions in southern Laguna province in an accident police said may be linked to the slippery road conditions.
TAGAYTAY, Philippines (AP) — A volcano near the Philippine capital spewed lava into the sky and trembled constantly Tuesday, possibly portending a bigger and more dangerous eruption, as tens of thousands of people fled villages darkened and blanketed by heavy ash.

Government work was suspended and schools were closed in a number of towns and cities, including Manila, because of health risks from the ash. Hundreds of flights were canceled or delayed, affecting tens of thousands of passengers.

The continued restiveness of the Taal volcano and several new fissures in the ground nearby likely mean magma is rising and may lead to further eruptive activity, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

The volcano was spurting fountains of red-hot lava 800 meters (half a mile) into the sky, and the massive column of ash and volcanic debris at times lit up with streaks of lightning.
The photo is from 2013. It is taken from the rim of the crater of Taal, on Volcano Island. The nearer water is the crater lake. The further is a bit of the caldera, Lake Taal. The latter is roughly elliptical and something like 17 km on the longer dimension. When we saw it there was a lot of tilapia farming in the caldera lake, which is warmed from below. I imagine that is totally demolished. Of course, the crater lake is but a memory for now.

Correction: The caldera is about 25 x 30 km.

Taal Update – Ongoing Intrusion

https://www.volcanocafe.org/taal-update-ongoing-intrusion/
It is amusing to see Taal referred to as e World's Smallest Volcano." That is in reference to Volcano Island itself. In fact, in most of the 50 km excursion from Manila, the road was climbing the very gentle slope of this shield-like monster. It got steeper as we neared the caldera rim. The lake was quite far down from there.

"Guest post from Héctor (DustDevil). There will be a further update either later today or tomorrow as events have changed since Héctor wrote this post."
The Main Crater of Taal seems to have calmed down, doesn’t it? However fissures are breaking the ground apart, the river dries, Lake Taal falls and strong earthquakes keep coming. What exactly is going on right now at Taal behind all of these changes?

As I have mentioned a couple of times in the commentary section of the previous post a dyke intrusion seems to be occurring. This is not something you are going to see in the news, at least not the word “dyke”, and at least so far. However, for someone with a particular and deep interest in the workings of rift zones and basaltic volcanoes (like me) what was happening seems obvious.

And don’t let the enormous caldera of Taal fool you, it is a basaltic volcano after all! Might have done a couple of large silicic eruptions in the past with ignimbrites but currently, it has more in common with a shield volcano.
The Macolod Corridor
To understand Taal knowing about the setting is necessary.

Taal is located in the Macolod Corridor, an area varied volcanism, basalts, andesites and dacites are found here. It spans a 60 km long area of southern Luzon, Philippines. Even though small in area there is a number of volcanoes, you find 2 large calderas, Laguna de Bay and Taal plus a number of stratovolcanoes (Banahaw, Makelunyo, Makiling) and monogenetic vents: maars, cones and domes.

The secret to the productivity of this region is rifting, you can think of it as a small continental rift. The rifting nature of the Macolod Corridor is well agreed upon, but how this affects Taal and its eruptive history has never really been considered.
EDIT: From the Comments, with the intro, "Someone managed to reach the Main Crater, very careless." I would begin with "some Idiot." However, it is amazing to see.

They must be quite athletic. The climb is very steep. We had stunted horses to ride, with someone behind whipping and yelling at it to keep it going. We had no idea what we were getting into when our friend booked the tour. I had a raw spot on my tail bone for days after.

For those readers not in the US, that is 3748.2 cubic femtoparsecs.

TBH, I'm surprised that the capacity can be measured reliably to roughly 10ppm.

This AP story, though not giving the capacity of Anderson reservoir, does mention that on Monday it was only 29% full.

The Valley Water web site gives its capacity as 89,073 acre-feet. That's significantly different from 89,278.

The site also says that
(One acre-foot is enough water for two families of five for one year.)
Doing the arithmetic, an acre-foot is 325,851 and 3/7 gallons. That works out to a bit over 446.37 gallons (1689.7 liters) per day being "enough" for a family of five, or over 89 gallons (almost 334 liters) of water per person per day.

The Greek Chapel is the most roomy, the richest and the showiest chapel in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Its altar, like that of all the Greek churches, is a lofty screen that extends clear across the chapel, and is gorgeous with gilding and pictures. The numerous lamps that hang before it are of gold and silver, and cost great sums.

But the feature of the place is a short column that rises from the middle of the marble pavement of the chapel, and marks the exact centre of the earth. The most reliable traditions tell us that this was known to be the earth's centre, ages ago, and that when Christ was upon earth he set all doubts upon the subject at rest forever, by stating with his own lips that the tradition was correct. Remember, He said that that particular column stood upon the centre of the world. If the centre of the world changes, the column changes its position accordingly. This column has moved three different times of its own accord. This is because, in great convulsions of nature, at three different times, masses of the earth -- whole ranges of mountains, probably -- have flown off into space, thus lessening the diameter of the earth, and changing the exact locality of its centre by a point or two. This is a very curious and interesting circumstance, and is a withering rebuke to those philosophers who would make us believe that it is not possible for any portion of the earth to fly off into space.

To satisfy himself that this spot was really the centre of the earth, a sceptic once paid well for the privilege of ascending to the dome of the church to see if the sun gave him a shadow at noon. He came down perfectly convinced. The day was very cloudy and the sun threw no shadows at all; but the man was satisfied that if the sun had come out and made shadows it could not have made any for him. Proofs like these are not to be set aside by the idle tongues of cavilers. To such as are not bigoted, and are willing to be convinced, they carry a conviction that nothing can ever shake.
--Chapter LIII, The Innocents Abroad by Mark Twain

Iceland eruption postponement

https://www.volcanocafe.org/iceland-eruption-postponement/
The Iceland Tourist Office announced this morning that the impending eruption at Þorbjörn on the Reykjanes peninsula has been postponed until 2021.

The decision was taken after a full-day meeting involving a delegation from the EU headed by EU commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičiusr (Environment, Oceans and Fisheries) and the Iceland Minister of Health, Svandís Svavarsdóttir.

Þorbjörn is currently weeks away from erupting. The renewed inflation (see here for the latest IMO curve) is expected to cross the critical level (the top line in the curve) in mid-April, with an eruption following between 16 and 20 April. The eruption is expected to last up to a week, and to be a major tourist attraction. Þorbjörn is conveniently located close to both the capital, Reykjavik, and the major international airport, Keflavik, and the lava will safely run into the ocean. The Iceland Tourist Office has started to prepare safe access and viewing areas. The eruption was expected to give a welcome boost to the Icelandic economy. However, the current travel restrictions means that too few overseas visitors will be able to visit the eruption. In addition, it may be difficult to enforce the social distancing requirement, or to comply with the Minister of Health’s ban on larger gatherings which limits eruption viewings to no more than 100 people at a time.

The European Union has added to the pressure because of concerns on air quality in Western Europe during the eruption. Based on the forecasted wind patterns in mid-April, the eruption would likely violate EU air quality directive 2008/50/EC. The EU promised to provide additional financial assistance in the recovery phase from the current epidemic, if Iceland was willing to reschedule the eruption.

It was therefore decide to stop the on-going inflation. Completely cancelling the eruption was not considered because of the touristic impact. The eruption is instead rescheduled for 2021.
The series of earthquakes came amid warnings of a possible eruption from Grimsvotn, the country's most active volcano, as scientists recorded high levels of sulfur dioxide, indicating the presence of so-called shallow magma.

Located on the northwestern side of the Vatnajökull ice cap, Grimsvotn last erupted in 2011. Back then, it led to a temporary closure of Reykjavik's Keflavik Airport and caused the cancellation of some 900 flights to Europe.

The IMO stressed that the risk during an eruption is related to flooding caused by melting ice. “The possibility of an eruption triggered by a glacial flood, which could occur in the coming weeks or months, has to be considered”, the institute said.

Grimsvotn's last eruption was preceded by the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajökull, which caused huge billows of smoke and ash that left more than 100,000 flights cancelled and 8 million passengers stranded.
Icelandic mega-eruptions have been implicated in multiple "nuclear winter" climate-cooling episodes in history. Thus, tangentially, another such episode of - to coin a term - historivolcanological interest, this one due to an Alaskan volcano:

On July 7, 1980 I was in Champaign, IL and felt the 5.2 that hit Sharpsburg, KY. I was in a third-story office. At first I thought a truck was going by, or standing in the street below, and looked. No truck. Then things started shaking a bit, and I knew it had to be an earthquake. A bookcase full of books started rocking back and forth. I guessed (correctly) that I would have enough time to go over and steady it before it crashed forward. After an eternity, the rocking stopped.

Some years later, a bit NW of Chicago, I "felt" a nearby low-magnitude quake (a 3.4 according to local news reports IIRC). Rather than any sense of shaking, it was a vague sensation of something like a passing truck (though there was no truck), followed by a sense of absolute panic. It was a thoroughly unpleasant sensation of sheer, mindless terror, like everything was starting to fly off into space. And then it stopped.
I just looked at an animated wind map for the North Atlantic Ocean here. If this pattern holds, and it is expected to, any volcanic ash would be carried down the east coast of North America. Ash and jet engines do not get along well, as everyone knows. I suspect all major air carriers are paying very close attention.
I remember when Mount Unpronounceable in Iceland erupted and closed most of European airspace.

SWMBO, I, SWMBO's sister and her husband were stuck in La Palma for three extra days. Full board and lodging in a 4* hotel at someone else's expense. Dreadful ordeal.

Canary Islands, I would guess. Tenerife was where two Boeing 747's collided on a runway covered in fog. It's still on the books as the worst airline crash ever. IIRC, nearly 600 died. Less than 100 survived.

Note: unadorned La Palma, not La Palma del Condado or La Palma de Cervelló. I suppose if you wished you could push your luck and go for an obscure district in Malaga.

I tried to be specific because there is a La Palma, California. Many in the U.S. would make the same association. I knew of it because it was mentioned in a documentary about the Tenerife accident which I had seen.

Here is live camera of the volcano eruption here in Iceland https://www.ruv.is/frett/2021/03/20/beint-vefstreymi-fra-eldstodvunum

Small eruption. But The saga say it was before year 900 since known eruption have been in this area and last to year 1241 with pause. So question is if the saga repeat itself again.

News reports say that the Fagradals Mountain volcano has been dormant for 6000 years.

I tried to track down how that determination was actually made, but without success. Apparently this particular volcano creates lava flows, without much ash.

I was able to imagine some possibilities. One was, by observing how the rock from lava flows has weathered. Another is, if a lava flow happened to have covered living plants, there might be some charcoal that could be carbon-dated. If some of a lava flow had been subject to regular sedimentary deposits, it would be possible to say how long that had been occurring.

There may be radioactive dating methods other than carbon dating that would apply, but 6000 years is pretty recent for the ones I'm familiar with to be accurate.

Anybody here know? Thanks!

Scientists took the lava under the scope and found out that this is the same type of lava found in older period of time when volcano activity was 6000 - 7000 years ago. It is different type than was coming up 800 years ago. News say this lava is from estimated deep of 17 - 20 km . The lava is Olivine Tholeiitic Basalts type from that time and have not erupted here last 7000 year. Probably coming in high speed transfer direct from the core. Also they find more of CO2 gases than usual. That also support the theory of the dept of this lava coming from.
