Long Bars in Latex

When making Latex documents in WinEdit, I've been using \bar{expression}. The trouble is, this only prints a short bar above the center of the expression. So unless I have a very short expression (1 or 2 characters), it looks like most of the expression is not under the bar.

Is there some command to make a bar that is as long as the entire expression?

Thanks

\overline{expression}: [TEX]\overline{x^2+y^2}[/TEX]

A search on "bar" in Eric Weisstein's World of Physics (http://scienceworld.wolfram.com/search/index.cgi?sitesearch=scienceworld.wolfram.com%2Fphysics&q=bar) finds several examples, such as \bar E and \bar N at http://scienceworld.wolfram.com/physics/GrandCanonicalEnsemble.html
