Where I grew up, "swipe" was slang for "steal".

Only much later did I encounter its use to denote sliding a mag-stripe card through a reader. I had, and still have, a hard time believing that "swipe" is so accepted as a verb connected with upright financial transactions, seemingly without any consciousness of its criminal association.
