Pub found in Pompeii...lol
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-55454717
The BBC article has the type of establishment spelled as as "termopolium," as does the CNN story. It seems the name comes from the Greek word θερμοπώλιον which suggests (at least to me) a "th" beginning. The spelling "thermopolium" appears in the AP story, which has a bit more detail on what they found. |
Apparently it had a picture menu. As a port, Pompeii had many sailors visiting who did not all speak one language.
You can imagine such a place today: "Volcano cooked burgers!" |
Was there a couple of years ago and I shall return.
This reminded I need to read Robert Harris' book. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pompeii_(novel) |

Food is adequate, better than some places, but most definitely not haute cuisine.
Around the restaurant the rock is well above 100C only 30-40cm below ground level. The artificial geyser shown in the article is a borehole about 1m deep into which a member of the restaurant staff pours a ladle of water. |

Google for volcano cooking or geothermal cooking. |

re Claude Shannon, methink "the father of information technology" is a bit pompous said, but we are used with American ways of thinking that they invented everything...
He did a lot of nice things, but he stayed on the shoulders of other giants, mostly foreigners, like Turing, Marconi, von Neumann, Boole, etc., not forgetting Stefan Odobleja (who we know as "the father of cybernetics", at least "they" taught us so, during the communism, hehe, in fact, these people are all "father of something", communication, boolean algebra, whatever). But yeah, great guy! Nice reading about him! Thanks for sharing. |
