Let us assume that it take 2 days for delivery from Spain to Scotland, 3 days from Spain to The Netherlands, and 2 days from Scotland to either Spain or the Netherlands. Nick receives two left shoes after 2 days and the right shoes a day later. If the shipping company had amalgamated the order in Spain Nick would have had to wait 5 days; if it went via Scotland he woulkd have waited 4 days. By being in possession of two left shoes for a day he obtained two pairs of shoes at least a day earlier than than the alternatives.
