Exact hit! Thanks for clarifying. |

The thinking goes like this: "It is newer software so therefore it MUST be better". And at that point people's brains fall out and any critical thinking skills they might have previously had become non-existent.
From what I've heard, "death from the skies" sounds like a good approach to killing these things. They generally are in herds, and if one squeals in alarm, the whole lot of them comes running to the defense. So if you shoot one, and the shot is not instantly fatal, you might have more targets viewing you as a target than you can handle. If you seek safety by climbing a tree, you might be in for a long sit.
This page about the History of Wild Pigs shows that feral pigs are being spread around in modern times. I have also seen claims that the Spanish released pigs into the wild deliberately as a food supply, should they ever return to the area. I was on a backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail near the TN-NC border lo, these many years ago, and can recall hearing wild pigs roaming around at night. We could see the damage they had done the following morning.
From what I've read, another popular approach is to stake out a large field overnight, newly planted or with fresh green shoots of young plants. In a van. With an AR10 (.308 caliber big brother to the wimpy .223 AR15), night vision scope, and additional large capacity mags. With a guide and other hunters similarly equipped. When the guide says go, everybody dumps their mag into the dozens of suddenly madly scramblig pigs, that were until a moment ago diligently destroying the farmer's crop. Farmers lose tens of acres per night to marauding swine. The farmers lease to an outfitter for free, in return for the pest control. Be glad for folks such as these, that we have groceries in the store and the prices are not double what they are. And that the pigs can't shoot back. Some hogs can weigh over half a ton, definitely big game. The Wisconsin DNR includes in its deer hunting pamphlet, encouragement to shoot any and all feral hogs on sight. https://feralhogs.tamu.edu/frequently-asked-questions/frequently-asked-questions-wild-pigs/ And that is despite removing an estimated 3/4 million hogs annually. The Boar Buster trap was developed to specifically trap feral boars.
It sounds interesting. The video keeps declaring an error with advice to try again later. |

I have no sympathy for destructive invasive species. Can the trapped hogs be used for food, whether human or pet? |

Yep, wrong paste, there are too many letters in the link, should only be 11. OTOH, only 45 hogs in that trap??? You need some Romanians there... any open position? Or some Russians, there was a video I watched some time ago with a shooting compilation by some Siberian team, like 20 or 30 minutes of boars making tumbles... quite satisfying (sorry, animal lovers!) - but I can't find it right now. In few places they are really pest, destroying the crops and the forest, and there is open season the whole year. |
Even domestic swine can be dangerous. I have heard a sow "defined" as "Four hundred pounds of mean." That scene at the beginning of the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz where Dorothy falls into the pig pen was no joke.
Pigs are intelligent, move in groups, and even the ordinary-sized ones are in the 200-pound range. That's about what a large mastiff weighs. I wouldn't want to take on a herd of feral swine any more than I would a pack of mastiffs. Feral swine are edible -- unless you're on a pork-free diet -- and feral pigs are probably leaner and have a more varied diet than "factory farm" raised swine. However, feral swine probably have a range of parasites and diseases you would have to guard against. Alas, there is little prospect of being able to kill and butcher them fast enough to eat our way out of the problem. |
