Speaking of knitting... I read the following anecdote about Paul Dirac in Thirty Years that Shook Physics many years ago. It's all over the Internet now.
Another time, Dirac was watching Anya Kapitza knitting while he was talking physics with Peter Kapitza. A couple of hours after he left, Dirac rushed back, very excited. "You know, Anya," he said, "watching the way you were making this sweater I got interested in the topological aspect of the problem. I found that there is another way of doing it and that there are only two possible ways. One is the one you were using; another is like that. . . . " And he demonstrated the other way, using his long fingers. His newly discovered "other way," Anya informed him, is well known to women and is none other than "purling."
|

And why Raphael Samuel of Mumbai is suing his parents for giving birth to him!
Interestingly, both his parents are lawyers and according to Raphael, his mother reacted very well to the idea and his father is getting used to it. In a Facebook post shared by Raphael about his mother, she said, "If Raphael could come up with a rational explanation as to how we could have sought his consent to be born, I will accept my fault."
If someone thinks their being conceived and born is a wrongful act, there's a sure remedy that that person, and that person alone, can implement -- at least, without risking criminal prosecution... |

No if they are physically incapable of carrying it through.
I guess you intend "they" to mean my "someone." Yes, in that case (which however does not pertain to the present instance) they'd need help. Supplying that help carries legal liability. The case of Ramón Sampedro, who wanted to end his life because he didn't want to live as a quadriplegic, but was physically incapable of killing himself, comes to mind. It made the news at the time. |

Who asks a question in PM and blocks PM replies? What's the point?
Got this while trying to reply to a PM I received, which requested information:
The following errors occurred with your submission: retina has chosen not to receive private messages or may not be allowed to receive private messages. Therefore you may not send your message to him/her.
Attempted reply was

How do you get that quoted text to show below your image? "The unspeakable one"
Erm, can you give a link tot he post? I'd be happy to share if I knew what it was referring to.
Any post or pm by you has on its left, an "avatar", most of which we each set up for ourselves as our profile:
retina undefined (image of a bald Mike Myers) "The unspeakable one" Jun 2006 My evil lair x posts
Go to your profile, click About me; click on "View your About Me as seen by everyone else" or "Edit your About Me" seems to be a toggle between the two. Is "The unspeakable one" your name entry there?
So many questions this raises. Intentional or accidental, conflict between asking in a PM for information and having replies blocked? Why the months long delay between my original question and the (currently pointless) PM reply from him? Who gets not allowed to receive private messages, and why? Wouldn't sending private messages be more likely to be disallowed, such as in response to some form of abuse of the privilege? (Asking in general.) Plus, my original question remains. |
I suspect the Retina didn't know there were outstanding PM's. Answered the ones that were there. Then turned off getting PM's (it is the user's choice).
To each his/her/their/X's own. |
