Tesla's (reputed) favorite invention
Interesting animated explanation of the (bladeless) Tesla turbine with an 80 krpm model.
(not very interesting) demo of a 10 kW, 850 rpm Tesla turbine generator. EDIT: When driven through the shaft, it functions as a pump, with the air entering at the hub. Supposedly, on his deathbed, Tesla said "my turbine" was his favorite invention. There is also a video of such a turbine made from the stacked platters of an HDD. EDIT2: 20 kW hydro installation using a pump for a turbine, and a 3 phase motor as a single phase alternator. |

LOL! Both of us here cracked up over this one! |
A bit off-topic, but is anyone watching the fan made web series Star Trek Continues?
I've watched the first one--though admittedly I was also playing Hearthstone at the same time--and it seems like a pretty faithful rendition of original series with some nods to later developments like holodecks and ship's councilors. The second episode is out and the third is filming now. Apparently it's a collaboration of a bunch of Star Trek fans who work in the film industry and borrow/steal/create the props. |
