This board is ahead of its time
Literally.
 It says it's 3:12 pm GMT, when actually it should be 2:12 pm. Compare with the time at http://www.mersenne.org/primenet/ GMT is 4 hours ahead of Eastern Daylight Time in North America, 5 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time. |
This has been mentioned before...
It has something to do with daylight saving time... Just find a value that works and add it to your profile... Feel free to search vbulletin.com and find us a solution... I'm stumped at the moment... I set up all of my servers to use GMT, but it looks like the server we have right now is set up to use local time or something... Honestly, this is driving me bananas... :help: |
Xyzzy,
This may sound really dumb, but I stumbled onto it shortly after reading this thread ... On XP home edition; I d-clicked on the time because it was an hour off. There was a third tab "Internet Time". Under it was:
[x] Automatically synchronize with an Internet timer server . . . Server: [ time.windows.com [V] [ Update Now ] The time has been successfully synchronized with time.windows.com on 10/8/2003 at 5:38 PM. Next synchronization: 10/15/2003 at 5:38 PM Synchronization can only ...
Under Date & Time the correct Time zone is selected, but the help listing for "time synchronization" does not mention adjusting for time zones. So perhaps it uses the servers time zone? I tried [Update Now] and got some error about the peer's stratum being less than the host's stratum. (?translation: I'm not logged on as admin?) Anyway, check if the server has this feature, and if it is enabled, disable it! :w00t: |
Thankfully, the server doesn't run Windows...
We do run ntpd, which does the same thing you are talking about... Here are some excellent articles about how this works... http://www.sun.com/blueprints/0701/NTP.pdf http://www.sun.com/blueprints/0801/NTPpt2.pdf http://www.sun.com/blueprints/0901/NTPpt3.pdf |
Looking at the vBulletin forum threads on GMT and time zones, I get a slightly uneasy feeling about interpretation and treatment of GMT time. I am thinking that it might be a good idea to let this issue sit until after October 26th.
The Current local time in Greenwich as I write this matches the display of this bulletin boards reading for GMT. Since Greenwitch, England is currently on UTC/GMT + 1 hour because it is in British Summer Time, it will revert to UTC + 0 hours after October 26th. I am curious to see if the bulletin board will display a different GMT time then. It shouldn't because GMT/UTC time has no summer adjustment. I wouldn't be surprised to see that the bulletin GMT time display changes anyway. |

Perhaps you could edit /etc/sysconfig/clock and edit the UTC line to say UTC=true (or add this line if it doesn't exist) and then reboot? |
We don't have root access...
Besides, rebooting would ruin this:
%uptime 2:22AM up 255 days, 6:27, 1 user, load averages: 2.08, 2.09, 2.32
The forum software has an offset that we can adjust... I imagine when DST changes I will just adjust it an hour and everything will be okay... Every clock is perfectly accurate two times a day... |

Every clock is perfectly accurate two times a day...
Oh no it isn't! Consider a clock that is perfectly accurate at a given instant and which gains precisely one second a day at a uniform rate. How long is it before it next tells the correct time? Every stopped is perfectly accurate twice a day. Paul |
I logged out and checked the time and it is now correctly showing UTC time...
So I guess we are good to go until April... |
Glad that it works out for at least 6 months. I noticed on vBulletin.com lots of discussion on time zone issues. Notable quotes from vBulletin team members:
"Timezones are the worst thing for any developer, ever ever ever." "Trust me, I would parade around if we got rid of DST." |
DST for me has long been called "Daylight Stupid Time" - part of my heritage as a Hoosier born and raised, I guess, since Indiana is one of the few states that ignores that particular stupidity of law....

| All times are UTC. The time now is 10:00. |
