Mersenne Widget?
I think many of the members of this forum surely have their own blogs/webpages.
I thought it may be a nice idea to have a widget (like those weather widgets) that can be inserted on some panel in the blog (for example the wordpress left panel), that generates some custom real-time image of some status of primenet, with a link to mersenne.org, so that could possibly make more traffic to the project and some of the may even join gimps. The widget could be some user/team status, or maybe all last LL results with user and computerid, or the P90 mhz apported so far, or any other idea with primenet data. The html code to insert in the blog would be a simple <img=...> tag pointing to some server hosting the widget application. I would love to have a widget like this on my blog. Do you think it is a nice idea? How could it be implemented? |
Seconded.
I've thought about suggesting this idea as well, but I didn't think it would be very popular. I guess great minds think alike! |
I creaded a web factorization applet for big mersenne numbers in GMP-PHP-MySQL (based on my Factor program), but my provider has no support for GMP extensions in PHP.
It checks billion numbers up to 57-58 bits in few seconds. Is anyone willing to host it? Luigi |
Basically a good idea. I'm involved in prime95 since two months.
I was a participant of the Setiathome project in 1999 and 2000. There were banners used in order to generate more tarffic. |
Banners? You need banners? We got banners!
PrimeNet people designed and produced buttons and banners to publicize GIMPS. There was a page on the old PrimeNet site that gathered all of them.
Is anybody aware of the archive link? Luigi |

I made some images to illustrate how I imagine some widgets could be made with current data. I like the 'lcd' interface, but there could be options for making it suitable to each one blogs/webpages.
It isn't needed the widget to be real-time, the image could be generated every minute, or hour, so that the server doesn't collapse :P I don't know how to insert images to posts, and it only allows me to add 1 attachment, so I'll post the images in 3 different posts |

Twitter implementation
I've got another idea that I think is simpler to implement.
What if instead of generating a dinamic image, for each new result, a new tweet is made? For example: 19197727,majorjameshannah,Home,B6A9EEB6D4087CBB,2009-08-20 08:27 19407527,wombatman,wombatman,357FABAD3C5797F6,2009-08-20 13:49 20343079,GrunwalderGIMP,GWPrime02,81AA7C569FE71FC0,2009-08-20 03:03 20364497,ANONYMOUS,v4_computers,F043980F9BD56F2C,2009-08-20 00:06 20596607,S36049,Wolle6,1F7DC64F4509BE75,2009-08-20 13:26 Each of those lines are less than 160 chars, so would fit perfectly on a tweet, and I could use wordpress built-in twitter widget to show it on the blog. I don't think it makes a heavy workload on the server. |
Mersenne Twitter!
Well, I couldn't wait for it, so here it is:
http://twitter.com/mersenne_news I don't know for how long it will work as it: 1. query each minute an LL report on mersenne.org http://v5www.mersenne.org/report_LL/... 2. this query is made by a cron job that runs each minute on my hosting provider. Should I make the querys by an interval longer than a minute? You can see as a widget on my blog here: http://mathings.wordpress.com/  |
