How to install v25.9 on Linux?
 

I downloaded mprime259.tar.gz, then extracted the six files (license.txt, mprime, readme.txt, stress.txt, undoc.txt and whatsnew.txt) to a new folder in Documents. Double-clicking mprime created 4 new documents: local.txt, prime.log, prime.spl and prime.txt. But I still don't see anything called prime.exe that would allow me to actually start the program.

The original poster was me, using a different computer.

Hi, mprime must be run by typing "./mprime -m" in the folder where the executable is in order to make the menu appear, take the options you want and then select option4 to continue.
For full automatic operation you will have to edit the inittab file in /etc, with sudo or su with a line like this at the bottom of the file 2345:boot:/home/mersennefolderblablabla/mprime > /dev/null

Another option is to put it in cron, like this:

-Open a terminal and run the command "crontab -e". This will open your crontab for editing in the default command-line text editor. (On many more "user-friendly" distros, this is nano; though some distros use vim instead.)

-Enter the following line in the file:
[I]@reboot /path/to/gimps/folder/mprime[/I]

-Close and save the file. The crontab will automatically be updated and mprime will be run automatically in the background at startup.

With that you run it under root. Better use the method I described in the other linux mprime thread.

I'm trying to move a test from a Windows machine to a Linux machine. Should I ftp the file from Windows to Linux in binary mode or ASCII mode?

You should have no problem with the WinSCP tool, or the linux scp command..
