Salud! I wish I had one to raise. I wonder if my previously excellent HD Lipotropin count is going to plummet now that I am in a state of attempted abstinence. |
It's light Jim, but not as we know it.

Wow! I'm really glad that some folks are thinking of stuff like this ... especially if they discover it in my lifetime. |

Looks like fun from this distance but I wouldn't have wanted to be on the same planet when it was going on. |
The TU Delft is going to look seriously at the possible realisation of quantum computers in a new project partly funded by the Dutch government.
Press releases about it have not yet been translated into English, but here is a Dutch link: http://www.tudelft.nl/nl/actueel/laatste-nieuws/artikel/detail/nederlandse-overheid-geeft-startsein-voor-race-naar-quantumcomputer/ |
Between January and June 2013, Science contributing correspondent John Bohannon submitted 304 fake research papers to open access journals. The papers were designed with such grave scientific flaws that they should have been rejected immediately by editors and peer reviewers. This map shows which journals accepted or rejected the papers, along with the email correspondences that led to those outcomes. Using data from email IP addresses and bank invoices, it also compares the countries where publishers claim to be with the location of their editors and bank accounts--information that is frequently obscured by open access publishers.
Now, someone was not squeamish nor lazy to make a wide-scale experiment to expose the fraudulent journals. It's a good start. |

Haven't spoken to him in a while, but it's nice to see he's still a muckraker. |
Physics Nobel ...
... goes to Peter Higgs and François Englert.
No big surprise there! |
... goes to Peter Higgs and François Englert.
No big surprise there!
Glad Higgs lived long enough to collect his well-deserved laurels. One of the many things I dislike about the prize rules - no posthumous awards. ---------------------------- PBS Frontline just aired a 2-hour special on the concussion crisis emerging in American-style hard-helmet football, League of Denial. Chronic encephalopathy being found even in *teenagers* - yeesh. NFL's playbook here could have come straight from Big Tobacco. |
