newtons laws in action again:
The cannonball was supposed to go through a few water-filled barrels and a concrete wall. Instead, it passed over the barrels, through the wall, and then took a "very unfortunate bounce that sent the ball skyward," Nelson said.

About 700 feet away, it bounced in front of the Dublin home, then tore through the front door and out a wall on the back of the house. The projectile then bounced at least once more and crossed the road before smashing the window and dashboard of the minivan, where it came to rest.
Rumors are that tomorrow 12/13 at 1400 UTC, LHC will announce discovery of Higgs Boson mass ~ 125 GeV with 3.5 sigma certainty.

We talked about this in my Virology class this semester. They have ascertained the exact amino acid changes necessary to perpetuate this strain of the flu in the human population. The first is to get the virus to recognize human sialic acid on cells. The second is to be able to replicate at a lower temperature to survive higher up in the respiratory tract. This study, biologically speaking, actually does have pretty grave implications.

Higgs at the large hardon collider?

Any better way of describing it than

(Physics, Oxon, 1st class 1971)
I fail to see the difficulty with the basic idea.

Consider photons. They move at the speed of light, right? That's true only in vacuo. In a medium subject to the EM interaction, such as glass, the photons interact and slow down to below c. The interaction is between the photon and the EM field arising from the charged particles in the medium, principally electrons and protons under normal conditions.

Likewise, leptons, quarks, et al. inteact with the Higgs field and slow down to below c. The difference is that the Higgs field is essentially the same everywhere, whereas in the EM case the field is clumpy.

Perhaps I'm missing something.

An interesting concept- videos at a trillion frames per second (the link in the article shows some of the videos).
