Does that mean that higher-dimension approaches that do not *somehow* project to this solution in 2 dimensions could be ruled out? That could save a lot of money in string theory fundings ;-)

More plausible is an attempt for a gradual generalization of the 2D solution to higher dimensions.
One should not expect budget cuts now that pure mathematicians also get involved. :)
