We need to drastically curb both our per-capita impacts on the environment *and* our population growth rate, for in doing the former alone we merely palliate the symptoms of the disease, which is us.
You should thank your lucky stars that the good ol' USA doesn't recognize the jurisdiction of the ICC. If it did, you might find yourself indicted for genocide, per the following provisions of the Rome Statute. The group could be the national group of US-ers, the ethnic group of Europeans, or the entire human race.
Article 6 Genocide For the purpose of this Statute, ‘genocide’ means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: <snip> (d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; <snip> Article 25 Individual criminal responsibility 1. The Court shall have jurisdiction over natural persons pursuant to this Statute. 2. A person who commits a crime within the jurisdiction of the Court shall be individually responsible and liable for punishment in accordance with this Statute. 3. In accordance with this Statute, a person shall be criminally responsible and liable for punishment for a crime within the jurisdiction of the Court if that person: <snip> (e) In respect of the crime of genocide, directly and publicly incites others to commit genocide;
|
Cute, but population-stabilization/degrowth != attempt-to-destroy. OTOH one could make a pretty good argument that promoting unlimited population/consumption growth on a finite planet is more destructive/irresponsible/criminal, cf. the mounting evidence of a planetary species-extinction pulse unprecendented since the end-Permian. It's just hitting the various 'lesser' species and their habitats and ecosystems first, but it will inevitably move up the food chain to finally afflict the causal species.
Cute, but population-stabilization/degrowth != attempt-to-destroy.
Of course I wasn't being entirely serious, but construing the advocacy of population control as genocide really isn't stretching the Rome Statute much at all. Describing humanity as a "disease" is more worrying, given what the cure would be.
The real reason I think you should thank your lucky stars that the good ol' USA doesn't want to be a State Party to the ICC (and therefore unable to bring a case) is that I wouldn't put it past the Administration we've got now, actually to try to bring such a case against anyone who advocated either population control or cleaning up the environment. I find it rather funny that it is the good ol' USA's official disdain for the Court which safeguards us from such an abuse. I know that various states have passed laws that treat public disclosure of abusive practices in commercial poultry and livestock operations as terrorism. I don't know if there is a corresponding federal law, but I am quite confident the Feds aren't going to court to strike these laws down. Even as we read each other's posts, the Admin is appointing a [strike]scientist[/strike] lackey whose job will be to deny the conclusions of the government's recent report on climate change.
but it will inevitably move up the food chain to finally afflict the causal species
Reminds me of the statement, "Cancer cures smoking." |

Study finds people in Ireland and Scotland made “bog butter” for millennia | Ars Technica
There are some 430 recorded stashes of bog butter, according to Benjamin Reade of the Nordic Food Lab, 274 of which were found in Scotland and Ireland. It's usually found wrapped in some kind of wooden container—buckets, kegs, barrels, etc.—or animal bladders. The bog butter may have been buried as a means of meat preservation, based on a 1995 study demonstrating that meat buried in peat bogs for up to two years had roughly the same levels of bacteria and pathogens as meat stored in a modern freezer. Alternatively, it may have been a kind of primitive food processing.
... And yes, there have been modern experiments in making bog butter, most notably samples presented at the 2012 Oxford Symposium on Food and Cookery. [Benjamin] Reade [of the Nordic Food Lab] headed the project and was pleased to find that his homemade bog butter did not go rancid during its three months underground. (A second stash has been allowed to age for seven years.) However, the result was something of an acquired taste, "causing disgust in some and enjoyment in others," he wrote. "The fat absorbs a considerable amount of flavor from its surroundings, gaining flavor notes which were described primarily as ‘animal,’ or ‘gamey,’ ‘moss,' ‘funky,’ ‘pungent,’ and ‘salami.’" But Reade thinks that flavor profile would work well in "strong and pungent [contemporary] dishes, in a similar manner to aged ghee." In fact, there's a North African version of bog butter called smen (also similar to ghee, aka clarified butter) that is still used today, considered a delicacy on par with fine cheese.
It sounds like a Dr. Seuss title: "The Big Buried Bog Butter Battle Book." |
