We may finally have found the long-elusive cause of Alzheimer’s disease: Porphyromonas gingivalis, the key bacteria in chronic gum disease. That’s bad, as gum disease affects around a third of all people. But the good news is that a drug that blocks the main toxins of P. gingivalis is entering major clinical trials this year, and research published today shows it might stop and even reverse Alzheimer’s. There could even be a vaccine.
Huge if true, with "if" being all-important there ... the alleged finding is rather reminiscent to the several-decades-ago one linking stomach ulcers to stomach-lining infection by the pathogenic Helicobacter Pylori bacterium.

Huge if true, with "if" being all-important there ... the alleged finding is rather reminiscent to the several-decades-ago one linking stomach ulcers to stomach-lining infection by the pathogenic Helicobacter Pylori bacterium.
And just last June, https://www.theguardian.com/society/2018/jun/21/alzheimers-link-to-herpes-virus-in-brain-say-scientists
Perhaps it's something more general; brains from which exclusion of pathogens is less effective are at higher risk of serious damage. Or more complex. Like we used decades ago to think and talk of cancer as if it was one thing. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/controversial-new-push-to-tie-microbes-to-alzheimer-s-disease/ https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/05/080522155752.htm
A vaccine for gingivitis would be big news, just for the dental implications.

<snip>
There was an episode of All Creatures Great and Small in which the vet hit on the idea of heavily tranquilizing small animals he had no way of treating, in the hopes that their own recuperative powers would effect a cure during their 24- or 48-hour nap (I forget how long). And, at least in the program, it worked.

In "the Scottish play," the title character mentions
Sleep that knits up the ravell'd sleeve of care,
The death of each day's life, sore labour's bath,
Balm of hurt minds, great nature's second course,
Chief nourisher in life's feast, --
There is another thing about sleep associated with illness. I don't know if others have had similar experiences, but...

When I was young, I would always know I had the flu or some other severe illness coming on, because I would always have the same bizarre dream, which I never had any other time. It was the weirdest thing -- while I was having the dream, I would think, "Oh, no, I'm coming down with something bad!" When I woke up, I'd be starting to feel pretty awful, I'd remember having had the weird dream and knowing it was the herald of my oncoming illness, but I could not recall what the dream actually was. My guess was, the dream was induced by a rising fever, but I never knew for sure. Whatever the dream was, I haven't had it in 50 years now.

A lack of sleep can really be debilitating, at least for most of us. There are people who need very little sleep. I remember seeing a program in which one of the people being featured was a man who needed no more than about 15 minutes of sleep per 24 hours. He had a 3-year-old daughter with the same trait.
