80M to 64 bits ... but not really reserved
I'm not sure if this makes me an official LMH member or if I need to pass an initiation first or if I am violating some LMH protocol but ...
... when PrimeNet LMH assignments passed the 400M range and the bit levels increased to 65 bits my 32 bit architecture PC's (PIII and Duron) performance dropped noticeably. So a few weeks ago I started to manually look for available assignments under 64 bits TF. I have settled in the 80M range; mind you with the above mentioned hardware I would need almost a year to complete it and I don't want to be a roadblock so I have no problem if someone else feels the need to work in that range too; maybe in the upper half. Then I noticed that on your status page there is a comment that says 80M is "reserved by primenet". Maybe I shouldn't even be in that range?? It does NOT complain when I take assignments in that range. Any concerns?? |

I wrote that "reserved on Primenet" and what I meant by that was that someone had started reserving exponents in that range on Primenet so "pure" LMHers - who run disconnected - should be wary.
If you are reserving through Primenet you should be a-okay. Of course, we cannot stop anyone else from reserving exponents in that range either. |

Ah, that's probably me you noticed, garo, although someone else has been reserving some also. I was occasionally picking up a hundred or two through Primenet to start with, and watching for any LMHer claiming 80M, so I initially didn't think it worth posting. Then I reserved a week's worth before going away for a few days. Apologies to all - I should have posted. As a former LMHer I should have known better. So, petrw1, go to it! At the moment I have exponents between 80200000 & 80210000, which should be done in a couple days. Like your PIII & Duron, my two Athlons prefer TF below 64 bits. There's only one such exponent left between 65M & 80M, but there's plenty unclaimed in 80M-100M to feed them. |
I might join you guys as I have two Athlons that are very fast under 64 bits but crap at almost every other worktype. I reserved some exponents in the 192M range earlier today. I would like to work on a range that is likely to be tested a bit sooner.

Thanks P.S. With all the people choosing LMH; even some with big quads I am starting to see that we may someday soon truly run out of exponents <65 bits. By soon I mean a year or two. I guess I better upgrade the old iron before then; before they become almost boat anchors. |

LMH should be left for old hardware. I have two Athlons and a P-III 600 on LMH. |

My hardware can manage up to 63-64 bits fine. It is over that limit that it becomes really slow. 333M isn't likely to be tested for years if not decades, so any work there is not really urgent.

Exactly, because once all the LMH (<=64 bits) are done it will more or less obsolete probably hundreds of our old PIII and AMD Duron/Athlon, etc. that are very useful for LMH but simply cannot do P-1 or even DC/LL. I timed my PIII 866 on a 20M DC and it estimated at 90 days. |
