Their proxies are denying and spinning, but seriously someone should spend more time on word choices: Delphi denies its driverless car had close encounter with Google's
On Friday, a Delphi spokeswoman added that the Delphi car had seen the Google car move into the lane that it was planning to enter. The Delphi car detected “that the lane was no longer open” so it “terminated” the lane change. According to the spokeswoman the cars were about a lane width apart.
|
marketing and "race"
Not really news but a sense of bewilderment, outrage and even fury.
I participate in Microsoft's Windows (10) insider program. Microsoft[sup]*[/sup] sent me a link to a survey. Since I try to play by the rules I answered that survey. Then I stumbled on the following question : "What is your race (or ethnicity)?" To get the exact wording I returned to the survey and the question was changed to "What is your ethnicity (or race)?" The choices offered were : "White", "Hispanic or Latino", "Black or African American", "Native American or American Indian", "Asian/Pacific Islander" and "Other". Should my colleague who has Spanish parents have answered "Hispanic" ? At least on the question about gender one had the option not to answer... Here I had to answer to be able to continue, I choose the obvious "Other". What has my so called race or ethnicity to do with my appreciation of a software ? It really shocked me to see that question. It might be current practice in the United States of America but it is really out of bounds in Europe. It shows an abysmal lack of propriety and of knowledge and about other cultures from the part of the designers of that survey. Jacob * I checked the SMTP headers and the corresponding whois records, it is Microsoft. |
USA company care about it, for statistic purpose. and more targetted advertissement, I guess.

I share your anger at this sort of unnecessary information gathering and the attempt to put people in boxes which won't necessarily be appropriate. At least your Microsoft survey allowed people not to specify "male" or "female" even if you were required to indicate an arbitrary ethnicity from inappropriate options. Surveys which I get asked to fill in here in NL don't ask for information about ethnicity but they do almost always require people to identify as male or female with no third option, and that includes surveys from progressive organisations which really ought to know better. |
