[WTF]He threw the cat?![/WTF]
Gotta have your priorities straight.

(Don't worry, I'm inclined towards the same inclination )
Only just stumbled upon this and thought "WTF???"

How...?
See

Great find! Note some updates on what is known [as opposed to suspected] about Goldbach's conjecture, too!

Not the Pentium FDIV bug, I meant the gap with merit > 35 at this magnitude. The second largest merit among the 60k gaps is 25.34 (gap = 61212), and the average merit 11.75 ATM.
Must be some sort of prime number bending...?

Christenson 2012-01-17 01:25

I wasn't thinking of the Pentium FDIV bug...I was thinking of Skewes number, and the fact that this guy is a serious computational number theorist. All the mods of this forum will know exactly who he is.
It is also very much worth noting that with the error in the 5th significant figure of the result, it went unnoticed....5 significant figures of accuracy is quite a few in real-world measurements.

As for that prime number bending...it comes from the Riemann Zeta function...
Airport tower controller Robert Beck first cleared the Cessna to take off on runway 18, according to the documents. About 16 seconds later, Beck cleared the regional jet, Continental Express Flight 2555, to take off on runway 14, which crosses runway 18.

Both planes were at the same altitude, about 300 feet above the airport, when they passed within 300 feet laterally of each other.

Beck had "a history of professional deficiencies that included taking shortcuts with phraseology and not complying with standard checklist procedures,"

Beck, a controller for 23 years, also had been suspended several times within the last five years for tardiness, absenteeism and failure to report an arrest for driving under the influence. Beck also had been removed from duties training less experienced controllers after a trainee complained that "Mr. Beck was in the back of the room with his feet up and eyes closed" while conducting training sessions,
all this and still the FAA makes the stupidest move ever:
Beck is still an air traffic controller at the Gulfport airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration, which operates the nation's air traffic control system.
admittedly if they got off the ground safely I don't see what took them within 300 feet of each other in the skies.

See the movie Pushing Tin (one of my favorites, ever, I love Thornton in that role).

Dubslow 2012-01-21 17:27

Well I can't see the article, but from what I've heard, my guess is that its owners/admins live in, operate out of, and are citizens of the US.
